1. Building Collapses in Bhiwandi: One Killed, Many Feared Trapped

An 18-year-old girl has died and many others are feared trapped after a three-storeyed residential building collapsed in Bhiwandi on Friday morning. The building, Tahir Dijnore, is located at KG Nagar, Navi Basti in Bhiwandi, a city in Thane district around 20 km from Mumbai.

2. Fire Breaks out at Commercial Outlet in Zaveri Bazaar

A fire broke out in a commercial establishment in Zaveri Bazaar at the Kalbadevi area of South Mumbai on Friday evening, but no injuries were reported, a Fire Brigade official said.

"Our control room received a call at around 7.30 pm about a fire in Kalbadevi and four fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames," he said.

3. BMC Passes Interim Open Spaces Policy, Activists Oppose

The general body of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has passed an interim policy for the city's open spaces, allowing citizen groups,
NGOs and private organisations to maintain the city's open spaces for eleven months. However, activists and corporators belonging to different parties, have slammed the decision, saying it has gone against the chief minister's directives. They also alleged that the policy was tabled cleared in haste in the
House.

4. ACP, Politician Wife Booked in Woman's Suicide Over Mental Harassment

An assistant commissioner of police (ACP), his politician wife and daughter have been bo­oked for abetment of suici­de in Mulund. On Thursday afternoon, a woman, Riya Palande, 44, committed suicide at her home by hanging from a ceiling fan. According to the police, Palande has left a suicide note in which she has accused the ACP Damodar Choudhary, his wife, Bharti, and daughter, Nilakshi, of mental harassment. A source said that there was some dispute over money.

5. Unable to Face Taunts, Mulund Woman Commits Suicide

A 46-year-old woman was found dead at her Mulund residence on Thursday afternoon. Police said the woman committed suicide as she was fed up of her former business associate's constant threats.

6. Locals Tie Suspected Thief to Tree, Beat Him to Death in Mumbai, 3 Arrested

Three men were arrested from a chawl in Borivli on Wednesday for allegedly beating a man to death on Tuesday night as they suspected him of being a thief. They tied him to a tree for hours and dumped his body on the on road the next morning, said the police.

This is the second such incident this year in Mumbai when a person was tied to a tree and beaten to death after being suspected of committing a theft. Last month, a suspected thief was beaten to death in Madh area of Malad (West).

7. Farmers' Markets Wilt Under Tepid Response

The state government’s yearlong bid to popularise weekly farmers’ markets in the city has, if one were to go by the numbers, not made much of an impact. Twelve of the 50 markets opened by the Agricultural Marketing Board in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai have already shut down. While a few markets are popular with Mumbaikars, several others see meagre participation from farmers.

8. Rajinikanth, Mammootty to Debut in Marathi Cinema With Pasaayadan

The year 1991 marked the first collaboration between Tamil and Malayalam acting greats, Rajinikanth and Mammootty, in the Tamil crime-drama Thalapathy. The film sent the duo's fans in such a frenzy that the makers decided to re-release it soon after its theatrical run with two different endings to suit the sensibilities in Kerala as well as Tamil Nadu.
