1. Rs 4,802 Crore Beed Water Grid Gets Cabinet Nod

A month after giving the go-ahead for implementing its water grid project in Aurangabad and Jalna, the state cabinet on Tuesday allowed for its extension in Beed.

While project package in Aurangabad-Jalna was given Rs 4,293 crore, the one in Beed has received Rs 4,802 crore. The remaining two packages for Latur-Osmanabad and Nanded-Parbhani-Hingoli will be presented before the cabinet within the next month.The Rs 18,000-crore scheme aims to connect eleven dams through an integrated pipe network across eight districts in drought-prone Marathwada to ensure equal distribution of water across the region.

2. 2012 Mumbai Firing Case: Chhota Rajan Gets 8 Years Imprisonment

A special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Tuesday sentenced six men, including gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan, to eight years’ rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹5 lakh for firing at a city-based hotelier BR Shetty in October 2012.

Rajan, Nityanand Nayak, Selvin Daniel, Rohit Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalia, Dilip Upadhyay and Talvinder Singh have been held guilty of attempt to murder, hatching a criminal conspiracy and working under an organised crime syndicate under the Indian Penal Code and MCOCA.

3. Strike Call: BEST Union to Vote on Friday

Slated to go on strike from Tuesday, the BEST employees will vote on Friday to decide their future course of action.

The BEST Workers’ Union is demanding wage negotiation talks with the BEST administration, which was mentioned in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two in June.

Shashank Rao, general secretary of the union, said: “We have not received any proposal from the administration about our demands. We have decided to hold a vote on Friday. The workers will decide whether we go on strike or not. We had conducted a similar vote in December last year, before going on strike in January.”

4. Dahi Handi: ‘Permit Only Those Mandals that Have Insurance’

In an effort to abide by the Bombay high court (HC) directions of 2017 to improve safety measures during Dahi Handi celebrations, Mumbai Police and Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti (DHSS), the umbrella body of mandals, have asked organisers to allow only those mandals that have insured their members. They have also asked organisers to not allow mandals that allow participants below 14 years of age.

“Representatives of Govinda pathaks asked to emphasise on insurance when they met the commissioner. In the guidelines for organisers, we are going to mention this clause; otherwise their NOC could be revoked,” said the spokesperson for Mumbai Police.

5. Bombay HC: Will Decide if Compensation Should be Paid to Kin of Deceased

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday said that it will decide whether compensation should be paid to the families of the eight persons who had lost their lives in a blaze at Kurla’s Hotel City Kinara in 2015. It also said that it will take a call on whether BMC can be held liable for the incident.

A fire on the mezzanine floor of the hotel’s restaurant on October 16, 2015 had killed eight persons, seven of whom were undergraduate students of Don Bosco Institute of Technology. The fire had broken out while they were all having lunch at the restaurant, killing them within minutes.
