1. Bollywood Actress Rani Mukerji Gets BMC Notice for Illegal Construction

This Ganeshotsav, Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji can expect a house visit from the BMC, but they won't come bearing sweets. Instead, they will come with the police, up in arms after they were turned away. Last week, they tried to inspect her Juhu bungalow, KrishnaRam, over allegations of illegal alterations. BMC officials intend to pay another visit to Mukerji's bungalow in Juhu's Vasanta Theosophical Society on August 30, this time with police protection, said sources.

"The K-west ward office got complaints from activists regarding alleged construction work being carried out illegally, in violation of the approved plans that were submitted to BMC's Building Proposal Department. On receiving the complaint, we issued a notice to the owner and paid a visit but were not allowed to inspect the premises," said a civic official.

3. Father of Titwala Youth Who Committed Suicide Blames Cops for Falsely Accusing Son

Fearing that the police would label him as "thief", a 21-year-old ended his life in Titwala, Thane, yesterday. His parents have alleged that the Titwala police took their son's mobile phone and jacket on the pretext of probing his role in a bike theft case. Mitesh Rajesh Jagtap had a diploma in automobiles and was looking for a job for the last few months. He lived with his parents and younger brother, Jatin Jagtap, 18, in Nyaneshwar Nagar, Titwala. His father works as a security guard and mother takes tuitions at home.

Mitesh allegedly hanged himself between 1.30 am and 2.30 am in the hall of his ground floor flat in Sai Prasad Building. His family was sleeping at the time of the incident. "We both sleep in the hall, while our parents sleep in the bedroom," said Jatin. "He came home around 1.30 am on Wednesday, after which we went to sleep. When I got up around 2.30 am, I found his limp body, hanging from the fan. I rushed to wake up my parents. I realised that he had even locked their bedroom door from the outside," he added.

4. Noise Pollution Matters: State Accuses HC Judge of Bias, Chief Justice Transfers Petitions to Other Bench

The chief justice of the Bombay high court on Thursday withdrew a bunch of petitions concerning noise pollution from the bench headed by a senior judge of the court, who had taken a tough stand over the issue, and transferred it a special bench. The move came after the Maharashtra government levelled accusation of “serious bias” against justice Abhay Oka. Meanwhile, utter confusion prevails over the existence of the silence zones in Mumbai and the rest of the Maharashtra, and loudspeakers and high-decibel noise are expected during the forthcoming festivals. The state government itself has maintained that there are no silence zones in existence anywhere across Maharashtra.

Justice Oka reacted sharply to the accusation of bias saying he was shocked to notice that the state government had “acted like an ordinary litigant” without elaborating on various tactics employed by private litigants to seek transfer their matters from the judge or the bench which is unfavourable to them. “Once state starts acting like an ordinary litigant, they [authorities] can do anything,” said justice Oka, completely disapproving the conduct of the government. On Thursday morning, the judge refused to recuse from hearing the matters and had posted the group for hearing in the afternoon session.

The people of Mumbai today welcomed Lord Ganesh with the deity's idols -- from small to grand and decked up in vibrant colours -- installed in thousands of households and various pandals in the city. The Ganesh Chaturthi today marks the 125th celebration of the festival after freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak called upon the people in 1892 to turn the private, household festival into a gala event. People stood in long queues to offer payers to their favourite God at the famous pandals of Lalbaugcha Raja pandal, Keshavji Naik Chawl at Girgaum, Mumbaicha Raja, Parelcha Raja, Andhericha Raja and Tilak Nagar mandal.

"Till last evening, 935 mandals were given permission by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) while applications for setting ups 911 mandals were still pending. Last year, 1,393 mandals were given permission," a senior civic official said. This year the number of applications received by the BMC saw a decline, he said.

7. Carrying Cattle for Bakri Eid in Maharashtra? Dial this Number for Police Protection from Cow Vigilantes

The Maharashtra police on Wednesday started a 24X7 helpline—9503511100—to ensure protection to transporters carrying cattle ahead of Bakri Eid on September 2. Bipin Bihari, additional director general of police (ADGP), law and order, told HT a special 24X7 control room has been set up at the state highway patrol command centre at the Old Customs House in South Mumbai to receive the calls. “The highway patrol control room was specifically chosen as highways are mostly used to transport cattle from neighbouring states,” he said.

Instructions have been issued to unit commanders (SPs in rural areas and police commissioners in urban pockets) to mount surveillance and dispatch help in case of crisis. “On receiving a call, the control room staff will pass on the information to the police station closest to the crisis point. Logs will be maintained to assess the action taken by the local police,” he said.

The Bandra magistrate court recently accepted the B Summary report (i.e. no case made out against the accused after investigation) filed by the Khar police in a theft case filed by Poonam Bhagat against her husband, industrialist Jaidev Shroff, for allegedly stealing her jewellery worthy around Rs 15 crore.

Mid-day had reported that last June she had visited Shroff’s Pali Hill house at 11 am with her daughter and others but had walked out within 15 minutes without taking anything, claiming that her jewellery was missing. After a month of accusing Jaidev of stealing her jewellery, Bhagat had finally managed to get the complaint formalised in July. She had gone to the police station the same day to file a complaint, and later, approached the Bandra magistrate court, which ruled in her favour and directed the Khar police to file an FIR against Shroff.
