In a move that will definitely hamper the thriving of hawkers outside busy stations, the BMC and railway authorities have finally sorted out the issue of demarcation of land outside railway stations. The confusion has long benefitted hawkers who continue to thrive at entry and exit points of railway stations across the city. At a high-level meeting between Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar and railway authorities on Monday, the BMC has decided to demarcate zones clearly identifying which portion of the land belongs to the civic body and which belongs to the railways. DK Sharma, General Manager, Central Railway and AK Gupta, General Manager, Western Railway were part of the meeting.

2. Vijay Mallya’s Ghost Companies

The shell firms were allegedly used by the former liquor baron as vehicles for secret financial transactions and money laundering, says the Enforcement Directorate.

The address on the unkempt marble plaque of a British-era building reads “Pharma Trading Company Private Ltd – 2, Minto Park, Calcutta 700027”. But when you enter the drab compound, the guards reveal there are no offices here. This seemingly unremarkable discrepancy forms the basis of the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) probe into the shell companies allegedly created by Vijay Mallya, India’s most high-profile “wilful defaulter”, to funnel out portions of loans meant for his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The 16-year-old girl who was molested and assaulted on the street in full public view and suffered a fractured nose has been left traumatised by the incident and needs psychological counselling, doctors at KEM hospital have said.

The minor was allegedly assaulted by her neighbour, Shahid Shaikh, 19, after she protested his passing lewd comments at her at Nehru Nagar, Kurla.

The incident, which took place on October 17, was captured on CCTV camera. The video shows Shaikh assaulting the girl, and none of the passersby coming to her rescue. It was only when Shaikh left that passersby came forward to help the girl, who had collapsed by then and was bleeding from her nose.

4. Government Allows Cops To Set Up Foundation To Collect Donations

After weeks of debate, the state government has permitted Mumbai Police to set up a foundation allowing it to officially accept donations from companies under corporate social responsibility.

The home department had earlier expressed apprehensions that if the police were allowed to collect donations, entities would use the opportunity to influence the cops. A few years ago, the Mumbai Police had faced flak for getting chowkies constructed by controversial donors.

7. 36 MNS Workers Arrested For Trying To Forcefully Evict Hawkers

Thirty-six activists of the Raj Thackeray led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were on Monday arrested by police for allegedly beating up and driving away hawkers from near the railway stations in Mumbai and Thane. Thirty MNS activists were arrested by Thane Police, while the remaining six were arrested by Mumbai Police.

MNS had on October 5 given fifteen-days ultimatum to the railway administration and the police to clear the foot overbridges of illegal hawkers after the Elphinstone Road railway station stampede claimed 23 lives on September 29. The party had warned that if the authorities fail to evict hawkers it would take the responsibility upon itself to remove them from the foot overbridges.

8. JVLR’s a Crawl Joke On City

A few months ago, a person masquerading as Virat Kohli on Twitter wrote it was “much easier to face Pakistan bowlers than facing JVLR traffic.” While the fake Kohli vented his angst on social media, four people who access the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) daily, told this newspaper that the stress caused by the never-ending traffic chaos on the 10.6-kmlong stretch was taking a toll on their health.

Jogeshwari resident Pratik Awasthi, who rides a motorbike to work, senior business executive Geeta Uppal, whose society is located on JVLR itself, Chembur resident Tanushree Malakar, and Sunil Menon from Ghatkopar said the situation turns excruciating, especially during the evening rush hour, when it takes about an hour-and-a-half to just get off the stretch.
