A letter issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development has ordered Pondicherry University’s VC Chandra Krishnamurthy, to remain on ‘compulsory wait’ until any further notice.

In a letter dated August 21, Professor Krishnamurthy, who was earlier supposed to resume VC charge on August 21 after her leave, was ordered to remain on leave from August 22.

Another professor, Anisa Basheer Khan, the acting Vice- Chancellor, was given the charge of the VC until further decision.

Professor Krishnamurhty had earlier gone on leave for two weeks after MHRD orders when students and a section of the teaching faculty began protesting in the University’s campus. The agitation that continued for over three weeks effectively paralysed the institution, thus garnering the attention of the MHRD.

According to The Hindu, the decision for ‘compulsory wait’ was made after her refusal to continue her leave for more days. The letter by Joint Secretary, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu also stated that though Professor Krishnamurthy had informed her decision of resuming charge after August 21, the Pondicherry government had the opinion that ‘the situation is too explosive for her to return at this stage.’
