For the first time in the history of Karnataka, the state will have three Deputy Chief Ministers. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa Monday allocated portfolios to the 17 newly appointed ministers, six days after they were inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet.

The three Deputy Chief Ministers are Govind Makthappa Karjol, who has also been given the charge of PWD and Social welfare; Ashwath Narayan, who has been assigned Higher Education, IT, Science and Technology; and Laxman Savadi has been made in-charge of the Transport department.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today accused the Enforcement Directorate of leaking its document on charges against him to the media and blindsiding him with the allegations. Chidambaram also alleged that the Enforcement Directorate's note was "copy-pasted" by the Delhi High Court, which denied him anticipatory bail last week, calling him the "kingpin".

Today's hearing remained inconclusive and it will continue tomorrow. The Supreme Court said the protection granted from arrest to Chidambaram will also remain till tomorrow.

Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, in a special address to the nation, on Monday declared that Islamabad’s Kashmir policy was at a “decisive” point. He said he wanted to let citizens know what is Pakistan’s plan going forward after India scrapped Article 370, which provided for Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

New Delhi through a Presidential order on 5 August abrogated Article 370 and further divided the erstwhile state into two Union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

4. ISRO Releases Images of Moon Craters Clicked by Chandrayaan-2

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Monday released a set of pictures showing the surface of the Moon using the Terrain Mapping Camera installed on Chandrayaan-2.

The pictures clicked from an altitude of 4,375 km shows craters such as Jackson, Mitra (named after an Indian physicist), Mach and Korolev. “Lunar surface imaged by Terrain Mapping Camera-2(TMC-2) of Chandrayaan-2 on 23 August at an altitude of about 4,375 km, showing craters such as Jackson, Mach, Korolev and Mitra,” the space agency said in a tweet.

The Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police has registered a first information report against Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar and 70 others in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam case. The action has been taken following the Bombay High Court's order last week.

Ajit Pawar, nephew of the party chief Sharad Pawar, had served as deputy chief minister from 10 November 2010 to 26 September 2014.

Other accused in the case includes Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) leader Jayant Patil and officials from the superseded bank's units in 34 districts in the state, an official said.

Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh today cited intelligence reports to claim that terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) is training its members to carry out underwater attacks, but assured that his force is fully prepared to face any such eventuality. "We have received intelligence that the underwater wing of Jaish-e-Mohammed is being trained for attacks. We are keeping track of it and can give an assurance that we are fully alert to foil any such design," news agency ANI quoted Admiral Singh as telling reporters in Pune.

He declared that coastal security was enhanced after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and is capable of rebuffing any enemy attack. "It's doing very well. As the Navy is the overall in-charge of maritime security -- including coastal security along with the coast guard, the marine police and other stakeholders -- we are sparing no effort to ensure zero intrusion from the seas," the Navy chief said.
