A few hours after the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition filed by activist Zoru Bhathena opposing tree-felling in north Mumbai’s Aarey Colony to build a Metro car shed, activists alleged that authorities had started hacking trees in a late night move. Out of a total of over 2,600 trees which are to be felled, 200 had been cut by Friday night, activists alleged.

According to activists gathered at the site, at least 200 trees were felled before environmentalists and residents stormed the site, causing Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation workers to flee.

4. Dumped MLA’s Supporters Vent Ire on His Replacement

Angry supporters of Ghatkopar MLA Prakash Mehta smashed the car of BJP corporator Parag Shah as the BJP chose Shah over Mehta for the assembly polls. Ironically Shah, a builder, was brought into politics by Mehta in 2017 to defeat the latter’s arch rival Pravin Chheda.

Mehta, who was the housing minister, was dropped and he also faced charges of corruption in an MP Mills Compound case to an SRA project. He was a six-time MLA who enjoyed close relations with leaders across the political spectrum.

5. Court Rejects Terror Accused’s Plea for Probe Under Pocso

A SPECIAL court on Thursday rejected an application filed by an accused in a terror case seeking a probe under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after a witness had claimed that his one-year-old daughter was undressed and made to sit on a heated car bonnet by ATS officers. While rejecting the plea, the court told the lawyers that the plea cannot be considered at this stage.

The witness, who begun his deposition in the case in June and made the claim during cross-examination by defence lawyers in September, is yet to conclude his evidence. The defence lawyers will continue with his cross-examination next week. Special public prosecutor for the NIA, Prakash Shetty, had claimed that the plea was made to “intimidate” the witness as a “pressure tactic”.
