1. On Last Day of Campaigning, BJP MLA, Four Others Killed in Naxal Attack in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada

Less than 48 hours before the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Bastar region in Chhattisgarh, five people, including BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi, his driver, and three security personnel were killed on Tuesday, 9 April, when their convoy was attacked by Naxalites in Dantewada district. Dantewada falls in the Bastar Lok Sabha seat which will go to polls in the first phase on 11 April.

3. RSS Leader, PSO Killed in Militant Attack in Kishtwar; Curfew Imposed

Two days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, suspected militants killed a Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leader and his personal security officer (PSO) inside a hospital in the Chenab Valley’s Kishtwar district on Tuesday.

Chanderkant Sharma, who worked as a medical assistant at the Kishtwar District Hospital’s out-patient (OPD) department, was shot dead by unknown gunmen who opened indiscriminate fire at him and his PSO around noon in the hospital premises.

4. Election Commission Meets CBDT Chairman, Revenue Secretary to Discuss I-T Raids

The revenue department of the finance ministry told the Election Commission (EC) that prior information on income tax (I-T) raids cannot be provided, but assured the poll organiser that its actions are conducted without any political bias.

It added that its aim is to unearth illegal money that can be misused in the upcoming elections, government officials with direct knowledge of the matter said.

6. SC to Decide Today If ‘Privileged’ Rafale Papers Can Be Used as Evidence

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday, 10 April, pronounce verdict on the preliminary objections raised by the Centre that the documents on which it was claiming “privilege” cannot be relied upon to re-examine the verdict in the Rafale fighter jet deal with France.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will pronounce the verdict.

7. Not True, Says Defence Ministry on Congress’ New Allegation on Notes Ban

The government on Tuesday, 9 April, rejected claims that an Indian Air Force aircraft was used to fly in currency notes from abroad as part of what the Congress alleged was a scam around the November 2016 decision to demonetise high currency notes.

The defence ministry denial came hours after the Congress played out videos at its briefing on Tuesday that it said, was proof of a scam.

8. Keep us in the Loop: Election Commission and I-T Dept Tell Each Other on Poll Money

With the Election Commission under fire for not stepping in amid continuing tax raids on mostly Opposition leaders, the poll panel reiterated its advice to the Revenue Secretary and the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in a meeting Tuesday to maintain neutrality and keep the EC informed in case of suspected use of illicit money for polls.

On Monday, responding to the EC’s advice that action taken by agencies during polls should be “neutral”, “impartial” and “non-discriminatory”, the Revenue Department had said it understood what “neutrality” meant — and that the panel should advise its own officers to curb use of illicit money and keep tax officers in the loop.

9. Apex Court Dismisses Plea to Stay Release of PM Modi Biopic
