1. Cong Backs JD(S) as BJP Falls Short in Karnataka

With the cliffhanger 2018 Karnataka Assembly contest leading to a hung assembly, all eyes are now on Governor Vajubhai Vala. Both the BJP — which has emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats — and the post-poll combine of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) with 118 seats (including one BSP member and two independents), have staked a claim to form the government.

The governor is learnt to have told a delegation of leaders from both sides that he will be deciding on the next course of action after receiving the official notification from the Election Commission.

All three parties are holding legislature party meetings on Wednesday, 16 May. Both the BJP and the Congress have said they will meet the Governor again immediately after the meeting.

2. 15 Killed, Many Feared Trapped as Flyover Collapses in Varanasi

At least 15 people were feared dead and many more trapped when a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi during the evening rush-hour on Tuesday, 15 May, rescue workers said.

The toll is expected to rise as a bus and at least six other vehicles were still buried under huge cement blocks that came crashing down near the Cantonment railway station.

Five teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were leading the rescue effort in the holy city, which is also the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“A team of rescuers has been sent to the spot. Rescue operation has been started. We are gathering inputs,” an NDRF official, who didn’t wish to be named, said.

3. BJP Will Form Govt in Karnataka: Amit Shah

Despite his party falling short of the majority mark, Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah on Tuesday, 15 May, expressed hope of forming the government in the state. Addressing BJP workers at the party headquarters in New Delhi, Shah said, “This is the 15th election. The BJP has already won the last 14 elections. This is the 15th consecutive election where BJP is going to win.”

Shah also said the state has shown trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “clean governance” and rejected the Congress’s “dynastic politics.” He added that his party will form the government at the Centre in 2019. “Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, we will form the government at Centre in 2019,” he said.

4. Congress Was Ready With Plan B: Sources

The Congress may have played down last Saturday’s exit poll prediction of a hung Assembly publicly, but kept a plan B ready to stop the BJP from forming the government.

Sources say the final decision to offer ‘unconditional support’ to the Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) to head a coalition government was taken at a meeting between Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday afternoon after she drove down to his residence.

By then, it was clear that the Congress was not in a position to return to power on its own but had won enough seats to stop the BJP by teaming up with the JD(S).

Other senior leaders such as Ahmed Patel and the party’s communication chief, Randeep Singh Surjewala, pitched in to articulate the party’s position in public.
