1. BJP Pulls Out, J&K Govt Falls

Jammu and Kashmir was set for a spell of governor’s rule after chief minister Mehbooba Mufti resigned on Tuesday, 19 June, in a rapid turn of events after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended its almost 40-month-old alliance with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and withdrew its support to her government.

Late on Tuesday, Governor NN Vohra sent a recommendation to the Ministry of Home Affairs for imposition of Governor’s rule in the state. The move which will require the formal assent of President Ram Nath Kovind, who is travelling in Europe and Latin America and was on Tuesday night on a flight from Greece to Suriname. An MHA spokesperson confirmed that the ministry had received the Governor’s report.

Bringing an end to the nine-day political deadlock in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday, 19 June, called off his sit-in at the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s residence after bureaucrats started attending meetings with AAP ministers,

“We have nothing against IAS officers, 99% of them are good people, we have worked with them to improve governance in Delhi. They were just a front for interference by central govt & LG,” Kejriwal said in a press conference after leaving the L-G’s residence. He also stated that the “struggle” will continue until Delhi is granted full statehood

3. Trump Administration Pulls US out of UN Human Rights Council

The United States announced Tuesday, 19 June, it was leaving the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, with Ambassador Nikki Haley calling it “an organization that is not worthy of its name.” It was the latest withdrawal by the Trump administration from an international institution.

Haley, Trump’s envoy to the UN, said the US had given the human rights body “opportunity after opportunity” to make changes. She lambasted the council for “its chronic bias against Israel” and lamented the fact that its membership includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

4. Tension in Hapur as Cow Vigilantes Lynch Cattle Trader

A Muslim cattle trader was allegedly beaten to death by a lynch mob in Western Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur, putting the region on edge and compelling the state police to rush reinforcements to two villages on Tuesday, 19 June.

The lynching took place in a Thakur-dominated village on Monday (18 June) afternoon and claimed the life of 38-year-old Qasim. Another man, 65-year-old Shamiuddin, is in a critical condition. Both belonged to Madhpura and were killed in the neighbouring village of Bajhera Khurd.

5. Probe Panel Gives Police, CRPF Clean Chit in Mandsaur Firing

The Justice JK Jain commission has given a clean chit to police and CRPF personnel allegedly involved in firing at agitating farmers in Mandsaur last year, officials familiar with the development said on Tuesday, 19 June.

Five people were killed in police firing on 6 June 2017, at the peak of the farmers’ agitation in Madhya Pradesh. Another protester also died in a police lathi-charge at Daloda, located about 20 km away.

The report, which was delayed by nine months, stated that police firing had become necessary for the purposes of self-preservation and mob dispersal during the violent farmer agitation.

6. Indians Among Migrants Detained in US Prisons for Illegally Crossing Border

As many as 52 men from India are among the asylum seekers being held in US federal prisons in Trump administration’s continuing zero-tolerance crackdown on illegal immigration that has led to the separation of families and, most controversially, removal of children from their parents.

The Indians, who were mostly Punjabi and Hindi speakers, are being held in a federal detention center in Oregon, Washington state, where they were transferred as part of a larger group of 123 people held allegedly for crossing into the US illegally along the border with Mexico weeks ago.

Anukreethy Vas from Tamil Nadu was declared the winner of the 55th edition of Femina Miss India 2018 pageant held at Dome, NSCI Stadium whereas Miss Meenakshi Chaudhary from Haryana and Miss Miss Shreya Rao from Andhra Pradesh bagged the first and second runner up positions respectively.

The winners were crowned by the previous year winners, Miss World 2017, Manushi Chillar, Miss United Continents 2017, Sana Dua and Miss Intercontinental 2017, Priyanka Kumari for the respective titles to the end of the event.

World Cup hosts Russia virtually booked their place in the second round with a 3-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday, 19 June, that moved them to top of Group A with six points from two games.

Three goals in the space of 15 minutes early in the second half put the Russians firmly in command before Egypt's Mohamed Salah, who had a subdued game on his return from injury, struck from a penalty, awarded after a video review.

9. Server Crash Mars Day 1 of DU Admissions

Promises of a glitch-free online admission process fell flat on Tuesday, 19 June, day one of Delhi University's undergraduate merit-based admissions. The university's portal malfunctioned as the server crashed and several applicants had to return from colleges without completing admission processes.

Certain colleges, like Sri Venkateswara and Kamala Nehru, also saw fewer admissions on day one because of the crash despite a large applicant footfall.

Several applicants who had come to DU after meeting the sky-high first cut-off had to return disappointed as they were unable to get printouts of the DU centralised admission form.
