3. Nirmala Sitharaman: Opposition Trying to Paint Govt Anti-Dalit, It Will Not Succeed; We Won't Dilute SC/ST Atrocities Act

While an “irresponsible” Opposition was trying to paint the BJP as anti-Dalit, the Modi government was committed to ensuring that the SC/ST Atrocities Act is not diluted, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at the Express Adda on 7 April.

“Those promoting these agitations want the government to be seen as anti-Dalit. But sorry, we are not giving them the opportunity. We are with SC/STs. For those who want to make political capital out of a social guarantee given by our Constitution, I am really disappointed… that instead of fighting for (SC/ST) rights, they are building distrust… For the last 60 years, you (the Opposition) haven’t done anything for them,” she said.

Twenty-two coaches of a train carrying hundreds of passengers rolled backward and forward for about 15 km when its engine was detached at a station in Odisha on Friday night.

The Ahmedabad-Puri Express, which started sliding back around 9:35 pm from Titlagarh station, was stopped by placing stones on the tracks half an hour later at Kesinga station, but not before giving anxious moments to the passengers on board. No passengers were injured during the 30 km/h free roll, although it caused a scare among them.

The mishap occurred due to non-application of skid-brakes on the wheels of the coaches when the engine was detached at Titlagarh station, East Coast Railway (ECR) officials said.
