1. Ex-CBI Chief Alok Verma Declines New Posting, Tells Govt to Consider Him Retired

A day after he was removed as CBI Director by the Prime Minister-led selection committee, Alok Verma refused to take charge as Director General, Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards and told the government that he “may be deemed as superannuated” with immediate effect. He was to complete his fixed two-year tenure on 31 January.

2. Delhi High Court Refuses to Cancel Bribery Case Against Cbi No. 2 Rakesh Asthana

The Delhi High Court court has refused to cancel bribery case against CBI No. 2 Rakesh Asthana and ordered the investigation to continue. The court has directed the CBI to complete the investigation within 10 weeks and file a chargesheet.

The High Court also rejected the contention that the CBI should have taken the government’s sanction before registering the case, underlining that when a cognisable offence is alleged to have been committed, there must be a probe.

3. Congress Will Bring India Together Again: Rahul Gandhi

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday, 11 January, said the Congress would win the 2019 elections and bring India together again.

Addressing the Indian diaspora at the Indo-Arab cultural programme at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Gandhi said, “We are facing an electoral battle this year and I want to tell you with utmost confidence that we will win it and bring India together.”

5. Major, Soldier Killed in IED Attacks on Line of Control

An Army major and a soldier were killed in an IED blast at Nowshera sector in Rajouri district of J&K, an official was quoted by news agency PTI.

An improvised explosive device was planted y suspected militants in foot-track along the LoC to target Army soldiers patrolling the borderline in Laam belt of Nowshera sector of Rajouri district, they said.

6. Samajwadi-BSP Alliance to Be Formalised on 12 January

The alliance between the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be formalised on Saturday, 12 January, through a joint press conference by opponents-turned-allies Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav.

The much-anticipated announcement will be at a neutral venue, the Taj Hotel, where Yadav had formalised a tie-up with Rahul Gandhi, then Congress vice-president, for the 2017 Assembly election.

7. Former Banker and AAP Leader Meera Sanyal Dies

Banker-turned-politician Meera Sanyal died on Friday, 12 January, after a brief illness.

Sanyal, 57, had joined the Aam Aadmi Party after quitting her job as the country chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, and contested a Lok Sabha election in 2014.

8. Ashok Chawla Quits as National Stock Exchange Chairman

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday, 11 January, informed a special court that the Union government has granted sanction for the prosecution of five retired and serving officials, including two former finance secretaries, Ashok Kumar Jha and Ashok Chawla, and two serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, in the Aircel-Maxis case.
