QBullet: Mamata Slams EC’s Decision; 12 Injured in Assam Blast

1. PM Scared of Bengal, Says Mamata Banerjee After EC’s ‘Unprecedented’ Order

“The Election Commission’s decision is unfair, unethical and politically biased,” said a furious Mamata Banerjee as she questioned why the poll panel had waited 24 hours to impose the campaign restrictions. The panel, she said, had given Prime Minister Modi time to finish his two rallies before the campaign ban kicks in tomorrow night.

Mamata Banerjee isn’t the only one pointing fingers at the poll panel for the timing of the campaign restriction. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel made the same point in his tweet attack. “If situation in Bengal is so severe that campaigning must be stopped, why is EC waiting until tomorrow? Is it because PM has scheduled rallies tomorrow?... Isn’t it unprecedented that EC claims it’s an unprecedented situation in West Bengal but yet is waiting for PM to complete his public meetings?,” he tweeted.

2. Only Spoke the ‘Historic Truth’: Kamal Haasan on Godse Remark

Facing backlash over his “free India’s first extremist was a Hindu” remark, Makkal Needhi Maiyam founder Kamal Haasan Wednesday maintained that he had only spoken about what was a “historic truth”.

“They got angry for what I spoke at Aravakurichi. What I spoke (there) is historic truth. I did not lure anyone to a brawl,” the actor-turned-politician said during a by-poll campaign at Tirupurankundram near Madurai.

Hassan also asked his detractors to make “valid allegations”, asking if he could cater to only one section of people after entering active politics.

6. ‘Modi’s Tenure as Gujarat CM a Black Spot’: Mayawati Hits Back at PM

Countering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that he had been the chief minister of Gujarat for a longer tenure than she had been at the helm of Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday said that PM Modi’s legacy is “a black spot ”not only on the BJP but also the country.

“When the BSP was in power, Uttar Pradesh was free of riots and anarchy,” the BSP supremo said in Lucknow.

“The prime minister does not hesitate from calling BSP, ‘Behenji ki Sampatti Party’. Whatever the national president of BSP has, it has been given by well-wishers and the society and nothing is hidden from the government,” Mayawati added. She said the prime minister had crossed all limits of decency in calling the BSP her “personal property”.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav held a joint rally Wednesday and campaigned for alliance and BSP candidate from Ghosi constituency, Atul Rai, who is facing a rape case and has been absconding for over 10 days after a Varanasi court issued non-bailable warrant against him. 9. In India Election, a $14 Software Tool Helps Overcome Whatsapp Controls

WhatsApp clones and software tools that cost as little as $14 are helping Indian digital marketers and political activists bypass anti-spam restrictions set up by the world’s most popular messaging app, Reuters has found.

The activities highlight the challenges WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook Inc, faces in preventing abuse in India, its biggest market with more than 200 million users.

With fervent campaigning in India’s staggered general election, which concludes on May 19, the demand for such tools has surged, according to digital companies and sources in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its main rival, the Congress party.
