Maldives Court Overturns ex-President Gayoom's Jail Term

The Maldives High Court on Thursday overturned the jail sentence of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom weeks after he was freed on bail.

Gayoom was sentenced to one year and seven months in prison for obstruction of justice when he refused to hand over his mobile phone during a police investigation, Efe news reported.

Nana Patekar Sends Detailed Response to CINTAA over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Actor Nana Patekar on Thursday sent a detailed response to Cine And TV Artistes' Association (CINTAA) over the notice they sent him based on a sexual harassment complaint by Tanushree Dutta.

In his response, Nana stated that the allegations levelled against him were baseless and false. He also stated that he is in process of adopting legal mesaures against Dutta.

MHA Issues Advisory In View of Sabarimala Protests

The Centre on Thursday asked the Kerala government to ensure peace across the state following protests against the Supreme Court order allowing women of all age groups to enter Sabarimala temple, officials said.

In an advisory, the home ministry said the maintenance of law and order, including providing security to women wishing to visit the temple, was the responsibility of the state government.

Sri Lankan PM Leaves for India Ahead of 3-Day Visit

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday left for India on a three-day official visit, his office said in a statement.

During his visit, Wickremesinghe will hold discussions with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in New Delhi on a wide range of topics including housing projects in the north of Sri Lanka, Xinhua news agency reported.

Gunman Who Shot Gurugram Judge’s Wife, Son Sent to Police Custody

Mahipal, the gunman who shot at the wife and son of an additional sessions judge in Gurugram on 13 October, has been sent to 14 days judicial custody, ANI reported.

Mahipal had shot at Judge Krishan Kant's wife Ritu and 18-year-old son Dhruv. While the judge's wife had died in hospital, his son is on life support.

Farmers Block Railway Tracks Near Punjab's Batala

Punjab’s farmers blocked railway tracks near Batala on Thursday to protest against issues of stubble burning and to demand for more sugar mills in the state.

This came as Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek compensation for farmers for avoiding stubble burning.

Malaysia's ex-Deputy PM Arrested by Anti-Corruption Body

Malaysia's former Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was arrested by the country's anti-corruption body on Thursday on charges of misuse of power, breach of trust and money laundering.

Ahmad, who is also President of the country's main Opposition party the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), has been called in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) several times for questioning this year.

CBI Begins Probe in Jammu and Kashmir Arms Licence Case

The CBI on Thursday began its investigation into a case of arms licences issued in Jammu and Kashmir between 2012 and 2016 on forged documents allegedly involving some IAS officers of the cadre, officials said on Thursday.

The agency has registered two FIRs in this regard with the consent of Jammu and Kashmir government with the then DC of Kupwara listed as accused in one of them while unidentified officials of various districts have been mentioned in another, they said.

Landslide Hits Nilgiris Mountain Rail Service

The operation of the Nilgiris Mountain Rail (NMR) from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam was cancelled midway on Thursday following a landslide between Kallar and Hillgrove railway stations.

Work on the restoration of the rail service was on, railway sources said.

Former UP Chief Minister ND Tiwari Passes Away

Former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narayan Datt Tiwari passed away on Thursday, 18 October, at New Delhi’s Max Hospital in Saket, ANI reported.

He was formerly in Praja Socialist Party and later joined the Indian National Congress. Tiwari was thrice chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and once chief minister of Uttarakhand.

Navlakha Moves Bombay HC, Seeks to Quash FIR Against Him

Civil liberties activist Gautam Navlakha, arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case and his alleged links with Maoists, has moved the Bombay High Court, seeking to quash the case lodged against him by Pune Police.

His petition will be heard on Friday by the high court's division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharti Dangre.

Vikas Bahl Files Defamation Suit Against Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane

Director Vikas Bahl on Thursday filed a defamation suit in the Bombay High Court against Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and others, seeking directions for them to take back their statements, tweets and articles against him. Bahl also seeks total compensation of Rs 10 crores from the respondents.

The Queen fame director was last year accused of sexual harassment by a former employee of the film collective Phantom Films.

Delhi Police had sought four days custodial remand.

All-Kerala Brahmins Association Moves SC, Seeks Review of Sabarimala Verdict

The All-Kerala Brahmins Association on Thursday moved the Supreme Court to seek a review of the Sabarimala verdict, that allowed entry of women of all ages into the temple, ANI reported.

The plea said that the verdict suffers from several serious errors that have resulted in a “grave miscarriage of justice” for actual devotees of Lord Ayyappa.

2 Dead as Truck Hits Their Motorbike

Two persons were killed when their motorbike was hit by a truck in Chitbadgaon area here, police said Thursday.

The incident took place Wednesday when Dharmendra Rai (45) and Vinod (38) were going somewhere on their bike which was hit by the truck, police said.

Both of them died on the spot, they said. An FIR has been lodged and a manhunt launched to nab the accused truck driver.

DoT-UIDAI: Re-verification of Mobile Subscribers KYC Details Voluntary

Department of Telecommunications & Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), in a joint statement today, clarified that a few reports in media that 50 Cr mobile numbers, almost half of total mobiles in circulation, are at risk of disconnection, are completely untrue and imaginary.

They also said that re-verification of mobile subscribers KYC details will be voluntary after Supreme Court’s verdict on Aadhaar.

Us Says It Could Remove India From Currency Monitoring

Militant Involved in Attack on Police Party Killed

A Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) militant involved in a grenade attack in which three police personnel were injured in Baramulla district was killed Thursday in a gunfight with security forces in Pulwama district, police said.

Showkat Ahmad Bhat was wanted in Wednesday's Pattan grenade incident and was killed in the gunfight in the south Kashmir district, a police official said.

Petrol, Diesel Prices Decrease in Delhi and Mumbai

Petrol prices in Delhi decreased by Rs 0.21 and now stands at Rs 82.62 per litre and diesel prices decreased by Rs 0.11 to become Rs 75.58 per litre.

Petrol prices in Mumbai are at Rs 88.08 per litre, having decreased by Rs 0.21, while diesel prices dropped by Rs 0.11, to become 79.24 per litre.
