Operational Independence of RBI Important: IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday, 13 December, said "operational independence" of central banks like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was important for carrying out their responsibilities.

IMF Director Gerry Rice said this in response to a question on the recent developments at the RBI. He, however, added that his views were in the context of international experiences.

Trump, New Mexican President Discuss Migration But Not Wall

The White House says President Donald Trump and the new leader of Mexico discussed "positive relations" between the two countries in a phone call this week. But Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told reporters that he and Trump have never discussed the contentious topic of the border wall.

Lopez Obrador's statement Thursday came less than an hour after Trump asserted in a tweet that Mexico was paying for the border wall through the savings the US garnered in the renegotiated free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada.

15-year-Old UP Boy Dies in Celebratory Firing

A 15-year-old boy died after being shot at during celebratory firing at an engagement ceremony in Dadri on Thursday.

"Police reached the spot after receiving the info and rushed the youth to the hospital where he was declared dead. Case registered," said Vinit Jaiswal, SP (Dehat).

TTV Dhinakaran's Close Aide Quits Party

Prominent AMMK leader Senthil Balaji, a close aide of TTV Dhinakaran, has joined DMK today. He had started his career in DMK, later moved to AIADMK and became the transport minister in 2011. After the death of chief minister Jayalalithaa, he moved to TTV Dhinakaran's faction. He was one of the 18 disqualified AIADMK MLAs.

Dhinakaran said that he can’t compel anybody to stay and has lo problem with Balaji’s departure.

“I know Senthil Balaji since 2006. But I can't hold anybody's hand and compel them to do anything. It's his decision and I wish him good luck wherever he goes. I don't have any problem with this,” he said.

Supreme Court Puts Fortis Healthcare Sale To IHH On Hold

The Supreme Court today ordered a status quo on the Rs 4,000 crore sale of Fortis Healthcare Ltd. to Malaysian group IHH Bhd.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing the petition filed by Japanese drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo alleging former promoters—brothers Malvdinder and Shivinder Singh—violated undertakings and court orders.

Shares of Fortis Healthcare slumped as much as 7.6 percent to Rs 140 apiece after the court pronounced its order. On July 13, the board of Fortis had approved the offer of IHH Healthcare for an equity infusion of Rs 4,000 crore at a price of Rs 170 per share.

Court Orders Fir for Doctored Video in Case Against Yogi Adityanath

A local court has ordered an FIR against activist Pervez Parvaz for producing a doctored video as evidence in a 2007 hate speech case against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Parvaz had filed a petition against the then Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath and four others, accusing them of giving hate speech and allegedly inciting communal violence in Gorakhpur after a communal clash during Muharram procession.

Sensex, Nifty Close Higher In A Volatile Week

Indian equity benchmarks rose for a fourth straight day led by Infosys, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Yes Bank. However, the gains were capped as HDFC twins, Larsen &Toubro and ITC came under selling pressure.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.09 percent or 33 points to 35,963 and the NSE Nifty 50 Index advanced 0.13 percent or 14 points to 10,805.

Thirteen of 19 sector gauges compiled by BSE ended higher led by the S&P BSE Telecom Index's 3 percent gain. On the flipside, the S&P BSE Healthcare Index was the top loser, down 0.8 percent.

Mid- and small-cap stocks were in line with their larger peers as the S&P BSE MidCap Index rose 0.2 percent while the S&P BSE SmallCap Index ended little changed.

Maoist Wanted for 13 Years Arrested in Jharkhand Medininagar

A member of the proscribed CPI (Maoist), wanted for 13 years, has been arrested from a village in Palamau district, police said Friday.

The self-styled sub-zonal commander of the outfit, identified as Mukhdev Yadav, was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, the police said.

A team comprising CRFP and district police personnel arrested Yadav from Dhobidih-Gulabjhari village under the jurisdiction of Chhatarpur police station on Thursday evening, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Palamau district, Inderjit Mahata said.
