As many as 129 Indian students have been detained in the US for alleged visa fraud and immigration violation through their enrollment at the fake University of Farmington.

The eight Telugu-speaking Indians who were charged by the US Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) pleaded “not guilty” when produced for the first time before a federal court in Michigan.

They have been charged with aiding hundreds of students to stay illegally in the US by enrolling in a fake university.

2. Indian Embassy Meets 117 of Arrested

The Indian government is keeping a close watch on the proceedings involving the enrolment of Indian students in a fake university and the charges brought by the US Immigration Customs and Enforcement agency,

According to US Government statistics, 129 Indian nationals had been administratively arrested as on 31 January 2019 in connection with their enrollment at a fake university. The Indian Embassy and consulates have obtained access to 117 of them, visiting 36 different detention sites through the length and breadth of the country. Consular access to the remaining students, estimated at about a dozen, is continuing, including through the 24/7 helpline set up by the Embassy and outreach to the community, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said. In a formal statement, the ministry said, ‘GOI continues to closely monitor and take measures to deal with the detention of Indian students enrolled in a fraudulent university in the US.

3. GHMC’s Demolition Drive Stalled

High drama ensued at MLA Colony in Banjara Hills on Monday when GHMC officials tried to demolish an ‘illegal’ restaurant, reportedly being run by an actor.

Officials were not allowed to demolish the structure with actor Taraka Ratna arriving at the scene and people gathering in large numbers.

The restaurant management joined the actor and objected to the demolition. The staffers entered into an argument with the officials, drawing the attention of the public and media.

4. Telangana Plans to Merge Rythu With Kisan

The Telangana state government has proposed merger of the Centrally-funded new Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme and the state government’s own Rythu Bandhu scheme. The state and Central government schemes both provide investment subsidy to the farmers.

Under Rythu Bandhu, the Telangana state government is paying Rs 5,000 per acre in the kharif season and the same in the rabi season to every farmer in the state. Around 53 lakh farmers are benefiting from the scheme which costs the state exchequer Rs 15,000 crore per year.

5. Three Held for Stealing Fuel From Tankers

Nacharam police on Tuesday arrested three persons who were stealing fuel from Indian Oil Corporation Limited tankers.

Police also seized an oil tanker and 100 litres of diesel form a shed where the theft used to take place.

Following a tipoff that diesel was being pilfered from IOCL oil tankers, Nacharam police kept a close watch and found that the fuel was being stolen in the shed erected to commit the crime.
