1. Woman, Son Arrested for Murder of Elderly Couple

Two days after the decomposing bodies of an elderly couple were found at their East of Kailash flat, police arrested a woman who worked at their house and her juvenile son for allegedly murdering them. Police said the two allegedly robbed Virender (77) and Sarla (72) Khaneja of nearly Rs 9 lakh, gold jewellery, a mobile phone, a wallet with ATM cards, two cameras, a wrist watch and a woollen cap.

2. Assam Bombings: Ex-Bodo Chief Among 14 Convicted

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Guwahati on Monday, 28 January, convicted Ranjan Daimary, former chief of militant outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), and 13 others in the 2008 Assam serial bombings that killed 90 people.

Over 470 people were injured in what is believed to be one of the worst terror strikes in India, which were carried out a little less than a month before the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. The quantum of the punishment will be announced on 30 January.

3. JU Student Alleges Sexual Harassment

Close on the heels of Jadavpur University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) probing into allegations against international relations professor Kanak Sarkar, JU’s IR department has been rocked by sexual abuse allegations. An IR student on Friday lodged a formal complaint with the ICC against a fellow student, alleging harassment and sexual abuse.

4. Ward Boy Arrested for Filming Patient Changing Clothes

A ward boy of Jehangir Hospital in Pune was arrested for allegedly filming a female patient while she was changing her clothes for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure.

The incident came to light on Saturday, 26 January, when the woman discovered the camera phone lying in the room where she was changing clothes at Jehangir Hospital.

5. School Van Driver Sentenced to Life For Raping 4-Yr-Old

A special court on Monday, 28 January, sentenced a school van driver to life for raping a four-year-old girl in 2014.

The court held that the accused did not deserve mercy as the rape charges have been proved based on the medical reports and testimonies of witnesses.

Special Judge Vijay Kalotra found the accused, Pratik Joshi (27) alias Hiren, guilty under various sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012 (POCSO) and the Indian Penal Code, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

6. Minor Raped in Gurugram, Accused Arrested

A youth has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a girl in Farukhnagar area, police said on Monday, 28 January.

The accused has been identified as Gaurav Saini (24), they said. The incident came to light on Monday after the 16-year-old girl refused to attend school.

"According to victim, on 24 January, she was abducted by the accused in a car from outside the gate of her school around 8 am. The accused took her to an isolated place and raped her thrice," SHO of Maneser police station Kanta Devi said.

7. 40-Yr-Old Man Held for Kidnapping Girls in Delhi

A 40-year-old man, who wanted to have a daughter, has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping two girls from west Delhi, police said on Monday, 28 January. The accused has been identified as Krishan Dutt Tiwari (40), a driver and a resident of Rajouri Garden, they said.

8. Man Beats Wife With Bat for Dance in Son’s School

A 30-year-old man from Dombivli has been booked for allegedly assaulting his wife with a cricket bat after she took part in a dance during a cultural event at their son’s school.

On 19 January, when the woman, Alpa Kalokhe (25), got home from the function, her husband started abusing her for taking part in the dance. A few days earlier, they had quarrelled after Alpa had said she wanted to take part in the event. Sunil did not want her to participate.

9. Woman Robbed at Knifepoint, Pushed Out of Shared Auto

A 24-year-old woman, who boarded an autorickshaw from Kashmere Gate while returning home from work, was robbed at knifepoint and thrown out of the moving auto in North East Delhi’s Shastri Park on Sunday, 27 January, night. Police have detained the auto driver for questioning and is looking into his role.
