QCrime: UP Bar Council Chief Shot Dead; GRP Cops Thrash Journalist

1. UP Bar Council Chief Shot Dead Inside Agra Court Two Days After Her Election

Newly-elected Uttar Pradesh Bar Council chairperson Darvesh Yadav was shot dead inside the premises of a Agra court on Wednesday allegedly by another advocate at a welcome ceremony organised in her honour. The lawyer, identified as Manish Sharma, then shot himself, police said.

The attack happened at around 2.30 pm when Sharma suddenly got up during the ceremony and shot her three times, police said.

Agra City’s Additional Superintendent of Police Praveen Verma said Sharma, a long-time acquaintance of Yadav, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital and is in a critical condition.

2. Railway Policemen Thrash UP Journalist Covering Derailment

Two Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel were suspended on Wednesday for allegedly thrashing a journalist covering the derailment of a goods train in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli the previous night, officials familiar with the matter said.

In a purported video of the incident, GRP’s Shamli station house officer (SHO) Rakesh Kumar Upadhyay and constable Sanjay Pawar, dressed in plain clothes, can be seen repeatedly slapping and punching Amit Sharma, a journalist with a Hindi news channel. Union information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar Wednesday said he will seek a report on the incident of the journalist allegedly being beaten up by GRP personnel.

3. Armyman Shoots Wife, Three Children Come to Her Rescue

A 36-year-old woman was shot at by her husband, an armyman, in Greater Noida’s Devta village Tuesday. While six shots were fired, only one hit her as her three children came in the way to shield her, police said, adding that the accused is on the run.

According to police, Rinki Bhati (36) was in her sleep when her husband Sheel Kumar Bhati allegedly tried to strangle her. He was allegedly accompanied by a woman he was having an affair with, and his brother Rajeev, police said. A case has been registered against the three under IPC sections 307(attempt to murder), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

4. Four Held for Assaulting Karnataka Journalists

Two journalists were hospitalised on Tuesday after they were assaulted by employees of a pharmaceutical company in Tumakuru, police confirmed. Four persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the assault.

The attack came after the journalists visited a pharmaceutical company, after one of its boilers exploded. Irate staff at the plant allegedly attacked them.

The two journalists have been identified as Manjunath and Devaraju who work with news channels Raj News and Samaya TV Kannada, respectively.

According to police, smoke had been emanating from the company’s factory since 8 June and locals had allegedly complained about this. The journalists had visited the site to check up on this.

5. Man Held for Trying to Incite Tension on Holi

On Holi this year, residents of Harsh Vihar in east Delhi had found parts of a slaughtered cow and a bovine foetus in their locality. The discovery had led to tension in the area. People had held demonstrations to protest against cow slaughter, forcing the police to step in and check passions with the help of elders of the two uneasy religious communities.

Three months later, the Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested a man named Mohammed Imran, who has apparently admitted that he and three others, Parvez, Lukman and Inshallah, hatched a plot to spread hatred among the two communities of the area and create a serious law and order problem in the capital ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

6. 3 Nabbed for 2 Murders, 3 Attempted Murders, 4 Robberies in 43 Days

Three persons were arrested on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in two cases of murder, three attempt to murder and four robberies, all reported between April and June.

Among those arrested were LLB dropout and “kingpin” of the gang 23-year-old Lakshay Parashar who previously worked at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), 22-year-old Nitin Yadav and 19-year-old Jatin, said police.

On 31 May, the three had allegedly shot at a software engineer, while trying to steal his car in Narela industrial area and left him to die on the roadside. The same evening, the trio allegedly shot dead a 42-year-old man working at a welding workshop in Bawana over personal enmity.

7. Six Pick Fight over Water Tanker, Held

Six people have been arrested from South West Delhi’s Masoodpur for allegedly picking a fight over a water tanker, police said. Anvar Hussain (34), a driver, registered a complaint against Amikul Haq (33) and his accomplices Jannat Ali and Sameer, for initiating a fight and taking a water tank, which Hussain claimed belonged to his area, to another jhuggi.

In a cross case, Haq filed a complaint against Hussain and his accomplices Mintu, Ajlum and Fulwar, for beating him and his friends with a baton.

The fight allegedly broke out between Hussain and Haq at 8 pm Monday, when Haq was driving a water tanker to his jhuggi and Hussain objected that it belonged to his jhuggi.

8. Eight-Year-Old Girl Gang-Raped in MP, 2 Minors Detained

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two minor boys at a village in Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Sarai police station on Tuesday and the two minor accused were detained Wednesday, police said. “The girl had gone to bathe at a water body in the village when the two boys sexually assaulted her. On reaching home, she complained about health problems, after which her parents took her to the district hospital,” superintendent of police Abhijeet Ranjan said.

9. Trio Who Killed Bawana Bizman, Shot at Techie in Narela, Arrested

Almost two weeks after members of a gang murdered a businessman in Bawana and within 30 minutes carried out a carjacking in Narela, three men, including the mastermind, were arrested on Tuesday. Their arrest has solved half a dozen cases committed within a short span of 45 days.

DCP (outer-north) Gaurav Sharma said that the three men — Lakshay Parashar, Nitin Yadav and Jatin —were arrested from Bawana by a team led by inspector Dharam Dev while they were on their way to kill another person.

On 31 May, Parashar and his gang members went to Bawana in a stolen grey Maruti Baleno and shot businessman Anil Verma thrice outside his hardware store in the busy market around 6pm. Verma was killed due to rivalry with an absconding gang member, Ibrahim.
