1. NIA Makes Fourth Arrest in FiF Terror Funding Case

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Monday, 21 January, arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation (FiF) terror funding case.

The accused - a native of Kuchaman city in Nagaur district, was detained by sleuths on Sunday evening upon his landing in Jaipur from Dubai.

A case was lodged to probe terror funding module in the months of July and September, and three people including a native of Kuchaman were arrested, according to sources.

2. Delhi: Drugs Worth Rs 100 Crore Seized, Six Arrested

A big international drug syndicate sourcing heroin from the Golden Triangle countries has been busted, and the white powder worth Rs 80-100 crore has been seized by Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

Six people have been arrested and the hunt is on for more, police said on Monday, 21 January. The six men belong to UP’s Bareilly and Badayun.

The heroin was smuggled in from Myanmar and brought to West Bengal via Manipur. The contraband was then transported to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for distribution.

Sanjeev Yadav, CP (Special Cell), said that apart from an Ertiga car, a truck and several mobile handsets and SIM cards were seized by the cops. The content of the phones is being analysed to get information about the cartel’s network.

3. Karnataka: Congress Suspends MLA for Assaulting Colleague; Attempt to Murder Case Filed

Congress MLA JN Ganesh was suspended from the party on Monday, 21 January, after a case of attempt to murder was registered against him on the basis of a complaint by his colleague Anand Singh, who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital after an alleged brawl at Bengaluru’s Eagleton Resort.

Singh, in the FIR, has accused Ganesh of assaulting him. According to reports, the Kampi MLA had allegedly hit Vijayanagara MLA Anand Singh on his head with a liquor bottle amid a heated argument.

4. Jamshedpur Woman, BF Kill Her Husband; Keep Body in Fridge Before Dumping It

The Jamshedpur Police on Saturday, 19 January, arrested a woman, her boyfriend and another person for allegedly killing a city-based land broker named Tapan Das.

Police said Tapan’s killing was the fallout of an extramarital affair and frequent fights between him and his wife Sweta Das.

“A special team led by city DSP Anudip Singh arrested Tapan’s wife Sweta, her boyfriend Sumit Singh and his associate Sonu Lal. They have confessed to killing Tapan and disposing his body. During interrogation, they revealed that they had kept the deceased’s body in a refrigerator and later dumped it in Barabanki along with the refrigerator on 13 Jan,” Anoop Birthare, Jamshedpur senior superintendent of police, said.

5. Delhi Cops Jump into Yamuna to Catch Nepalese Human Trafficking Ring Kingpin

Six months after 16 women from Nepal, who were allegedly brought to Delhi to be trafficked to Gulf countries, were rescued by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) from a house in south Delhi’s Munirka, the police on Sunday, 21 January, arrested a 33-year-old Nepalese national in the case.

Lopsang Lama, the son of a retired military personnel, was arrested from near Kashmere Gate interstate bus terminal on Saturday following a tip-off that he would be meeting an associate there, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, DCP (special cell) said.

6. Mumbai Man Pays Rs 72,000 to Get VVIP Mobile Numbers for His Boss, Duped

A 38-year-old man, who is a senior executive with a private hospital in Bandra, was duped of Rs 72,000 by an unidentified fraudster two months ago after he tried to buy special ‘VVIP’ mobile phone numbers for his boss.

The Bandra police registered his complaint last week and filed a first information report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology Act.

According to the complainant’s statement, his company’s president received an SMS in November last year from a number that seemed to belong to a well-known private telecom service provider. The message said “very very important person (VVIP) numbers” were being provided to select customers at a good discount.

7. Haryana Woman Says ‘Gangster’ Husband Killed in Fake Encounter, Moves HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday, 21 January, directed the Haryana Police to produce an “eyewitness” in an alleged fake encounter before the court on 5 February.

Gurugram police in October 2018 had gunned down “notorious criminal” Bhanwar Singh in an encounter in Manesar. His wife and the eyewitness have approached the High Court seeking a probe while alleging that he was killed in a fake encounter.

Police, on the day of the encounter, lodged an FIR according to which Bhanwar Singh was a “notorious criminal” and was killed in self-defence by the police party as he fired at them first.

8. Mumbai Man Accused of Raping Child ‘Fakes Death to Evade Trial,’ Re-Arrested

A 31-year-old man accused of raping a minor allegedly feigned his own death by submitting a false death certificate through his family member before a special court in Mumbai.

The incident came to light after a policeman, who suspected the claim of death, went to the accused’s hometown to verify it.

On Monday, 21 January, the accused was re-arrested and produced before the special court, which sent him to judicial custody.

9. Class 10 Girl Raped by School Director in Andhra Pradesh

In a shocking incident, a Class 10 student was allegedly raped by a private school director at Inkollu town in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh.

The incident took place before Sankranti holidays and came to light on late Sunday night, 20 January, after her parents lodged a complaint with the local police.

Cops said that the girl had gone to her native place at Bhimavaram town in west Godavari district for Sankranti holidays and was depressed. She finally confessed it to her parents before she was scheduled to go back to her school.

The victim's relatives and villagers protested against the school management claiming that they had turned a blind eye towards the incident.
