1. Deoria Shelter Home Case: SP Transferred, Departmental Action Initiated

Taking note of the Deoria shelter home abuse case, the UP government on Wednesday, 15 August, transferred Superintendent of Police, Deoria, and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Basti (range), who was posted as SP Deoria between September 2017 and March 2018. Departmental action has also been initiated against the two officials.

The action comes on the heels of an investigation report by the Gorakhpur ADGP on the role of the police officers in the case.

A statement issued by the Principal Secretary (Home) office confirmed that SP, Deoria, Rohan P Kanay and DIG, Basti (range), Rakesh Shankar had been transferred to the DGP office.

The statement added that Deoria Sadar circle officer (CO) Dayaram Singh Gaur has also been transferred on grounds of “negligence and lethargy”.

2. Missing Children's Parents Queue Outside Telangana Police Stations After Busting of Child Trafficking Racket

Earlier this month, when the team of Rachakonda Police along with child welfare officers raided the BC Colony of Yadagirigutta in Telangana, they had no idea that it could lead them to the discovery of minor girls who were trafficked.

Now, several families from across the state are queuing outside the local police stations enquiring about their missing children.

The shocking human trafficking racket came to light after the Rachakonda Police got a distress call. An inquiry was ordered following which the police busted a prostitution racket involving minor girls between five and seven years of age.

Initially, it was suspected that the racket was being operated by members of the Dommari community. Police rescued 11 minor girls and six women were arrested in connection with the racket.

3. UP Teen Dead, Father Says She Was Raped, Killed Self

Two days after a 14-year-old Dalit girl allegedly killed herself after she was sexually assaulted and her “objectionable” photos were circulated on social media, Mainpuri police on Tuesday, 14 August detained two persons for questioning. Five accused in the case are absconding.

Police said they are yet to access the photos allegedly circulated on WhatsApp. “We were informed about the incident on Monday, while the girl died on Sunday. According to her father, a man named Monty Yadav (20) raped her last week. He clicked objectionable photographs and shared them with his friends and brothers, who later blackmailed the girl and forced her to go with them,” said Circle Officer Rakesh Kumar Pandey.

While the matter was pending before the panchayat, the photos were circulated on WhatsApp, said Pandey.

A case has been registered against the five accused under various IPC sections including rape, and relevant sections of the POCSO Act.

4. YSR Congress Men Arrested for Death of 3 TDP Workers in Guntur

The deaths of three Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers in a road accident on 9 August in Guntur turned out to be a political murder by rivals from YSR Congress, police said on Tuesday, 14 August. Those accused in the murder have now been arrested.

The deceased, Gurajala Somaiah (30), Challa Venkata Krishna (26) and Medaboina Mallaiah (26), were on their way to the local police station on a two-wheeler when a car hit them from behind. The two-wheeler lost control and the trio were run over by a lorry, killing all of them.

During the course of the investigation, the Vinukonda police found that before the accident took place the trio had gotten into an argument with YSR Congress workers regarding the laying of a CC road in Andugula Kothapalem of Vinukonda mandal.

They were on their way to the local police station to report on the argument when they were murdered.

5. Violence in UP's Auraiya After 2 'Sadhus' Killed Inside Temple

Two 'sadhus' were stabbed to death and another injured inside a temple premises by unidentified persons on 15 August, triggering mob violence in the Bidhuna area of UP’s Auraiya district, police said.

Enraged at the killings, a mob set some shops ablaze and pelted stones forcing the police to fire in the air, they said. The situation was brought under control even as there was a heavy deployment of security personnel to maintain law and order, they said.

The exact motive behind the crime was not immediately clear, police said adding they suspected the victims' opposition to cow slaughter could be one reason.

Taking note of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed top officials including the Principal Secretary (Home) and the state DGP to ensure the case was worked out within 48 hours and strict action was taken against the culprits.

6. Three Arrested for Allegedly Murdering 18-Year-Old

Three people were arrested on 15 August for allegedly killing an 18-year-old man and dumping his body in river Hindon in Noida, UP, the police said.

The victim, Akash, a resident of Chotpur colony, was reported missing on 11 August, the day he had a spat with the accused near the river, a police officer said.

"Akash, along with his friends, was engaged in some game as part of which they were throwing pebbles in the river. The three accused were on the other side of the river," he said.

"One accused apparently got hit by a pebble and the three walked over to the other side and confronted Akash and his friends," he said, adding that the two sides had an argument and the matter came to an end.

Later that evening, the police officer said, the trio again came to the other side of the river and coincidentally found Akash there, and slit his throat.

7. Rohtak Honour Killing: Victim’s Cousin, Shooter Among Three Arrested

Days after the murder of an 18-year-old girl and her police escort in a case of honour killing , the Haryana police arrested two persons after a shootout in Rohtak in the early hours of Tuesday, 14 August. The accused had gunned down the girl along with her police escort, a sub-inspector, in Rohtak on 8 August, police said.

The shooter, Praveet alias Prince, 30, was injured and was admitted to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, for treatment while his younger brother Prashant alias Tony, 28, has been arrested.

They belong to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. The cousin of the girl who had allegedly conspired the murder and hired the shooters has also been arrested.

According to the police, Praveet was working in a private company (merchant navy) but would visit Uttar Pradesh for criminal activities. “He is a member of UP’s Rajesh Bhadori Gang and he is accused in half a dozen cases in Meerut.

8. Bihar Block Chief Murder: JD(U) MLA Among 10 Named in FIR

An FIR has been lodged against 10 persons, including an MLA of the ruling JD(U), in connection with the killing of a Bihar block president, police said on 15 August.

Mahnar MLA Umesh Singh Kushwaha is among the 10 people named in the FIR lodged at Jandaha police station in connection with the gunning down of block president Manish Sahni on Monday, 13 August, SP, Vaishali, Manavjeet Singh Dhillon said.

Sahni's brother Prakash has said in the FIR that the deceased was elected to the post earlier this month, which had irked the MLA and his supporters, including a block education officer and a former block president.

The complainant has alleged that during elections, the MLA, along with his supporters, had threatened Manish Sahni that they "would not allow him to win, and even if he won, would not allow him to live".

No arrests have been made so far in this connection and investigations were on, the police officer said.

9. Three Held for ‘Cheating’ People with Promise of MHADA Homes at Reduced Rates

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday, 15 August, arrested three persons who allegedly cheated people by promising them Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) houses at cheap rates.

The trio, Pratik Thorat (22), Nasir Hussain (44) and Shah-ul-Hamid (49), would allegedly provide forged MHADA documents, like procurement letters, to convince the victims.

The accused are suspected to have cheated 70-80 people in the past three years. Police inspector Irfan Shaikh from Unit 9 of the Crime Branch said that they received information about a person coming to Khar area with fake MHADA documents.

Based on the information, the police arrested Thorat and found forged MHADA documents on him.

“During interrogation, he told us that the documents were to be provided to Hussain and Hamid who would present them to the victims,” Shaikh said.
