Hours after the AIADMK unveiled a portrait of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the state Assembly on Monday, 12 February, opposition DMK filed a petition in the High Court against it, reported ANI. Jayalalithaa’s portrait is the 11th to be installed in the Assembly. It was unveiled by Speaker P Dhanapal in the presence of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam at around 9:30 am.

Opposition DMK, along with ally Congress, boycotted the unveiling, citing that her portrait cannot be installed as the former CM had been convicted in a disproportionate assets case.

2. Global Investors Meet to Be Held in January 2019

The state government on Monday announced that the second edition of the Global Investors Meet (GIM) will be held here on 23 and 24 January 2019. The last meet was held in September 2015. The next edition was scheduled two years later, but it got postponed due to various “unstated” reasons.

In 2015, about 8,000 industrialists from throughout the world participated and 98 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to the tune of Rs 2.42 lakh crore were signed. Nine countries were partner nations, three regional governments were partner States and 23 Chambers of Commerce and Joint Business Councils partner organisations.

3. Time Tamil Nadu Kick-Starts Policy on Electric Vehicles

Tamil Nadu, with an established automobile ecosystem, can jump onto the electric vehicle bandwagon and take the lead in attracting investments, experts said. States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka have already rolled out an electric vehicles policy and the Tamil Nadu government needs to act fast in its policy push, they said.

Already automobile makers such as Hyundai, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor and Renault India, with a major presence in Tamil Nadu, have spoken about electric vehicles at the recent auto expo in New Delhi. The Centre is driving the electric vehicle push by proposing an ambitious target of moving to 100 percent electric vehicles by 2030.

After a gap of nearly a decade, a water metering system is set to be implemented in the city. Nearly 10 years ago, Chennai Metrowater tried to introduce water meters. But, it received lukewarm response and was eventually given up. This time, the Metrowater has targeted commercial establishments to fix digital water meters. This will be one of the early projects to be executed by the Metrowater under the Smart City Mission.

As part of its efforts to ensure judicious use of drinking water and check unaccounted water supply, the water agency has identified nearly 12,700 water-intensive buildings, including educational institutions, hospitals, during the first phase. This would help in assessing the water consumption pattern and also encourage water conservation, officials said.

A man who posed as an income tax official on Saturday, saying he was searching the T Nagar residence of former chief minister J Jayalalitha’s niece Deepa Jayakumar, has surrendered, placing all the blame for the episode on Deepa’s husband, police said on Monday.

In a three-minute video he released online before he surrendered, Prabhakaran said Madhavan “wanted to extort money” from his wife. “He said Madhavan gave him a fake I-T department ID card and search warrant. The card had ‘Mitesh Kumar’ printed on it,” a police officer said.

The head of a purported group of gangsters chopped off by his rivals in the Manimangalam forest and thrown before the Kattankulathur bus stand. Unidentified persons who came on bikes threw a plastic bag containing the man’s head at the busy bus stand located off the GST Road and sped away. People who gathered at the bus stand and the office of the Block Development Officer located nearby were shocked at the brazen act.

The deceased was identified as Balaji, 31, of Konathi village near Maraimalai Nagar. His name figured among anti-social elements in Chengalpattu, Maraimalai Nagar and other police stations as he was allegedly involved in murders and other crimes in the area. He was also cited as the main accused in the murder of DMK functionary Raviprakash in Chengalpattu a few years ago.

The first bench of the Madras High Court on Monday reserved for 16 February, its orders on a miscellaneous petition praying for a direction to CBI to permit Karti, son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, to travel to UK and other European countries in connection with his daughter’s studies and his own business purposes respectively.

By a look out circular (LOC) dated 16 and 18 August 2017, CBI had restrained Karti from leaving India, on the basis of an FIR registered by it in the alleged irregular approval of Rs 305 crore foreign investment in INX Media, at his instance when his father was the Union Finance Minister in 2007.
