The Opposition’s allegations against the state government in connection with the raids targeting a Highways Department contractor and an egg supplier were unsubstantiated and politically motivated, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

He said the income-tax raids on the SPK group of companies were for tax evasion. The state government too had conducted similar raids to check Sales Tax evasion. “These raids have nothing to do with my government,” he said. To say that he should quit because his relatives were involved was also a politically motivated statement, he said. “My son’s relatives in Erode have won contracts worth several crores during the DMK’s regime as well. And, I have friends/relatives all over the State, who bid for contracts from the government,” he said.

Ahead of his visit, the AIADMK cadre waved ₹20 notes in an apparent reference to the alleged distribution of cash during the byelection by the Dhinakaran camp. This did not go down well with the AMMK cadre, who clashed with the AIADMK members. When the police tried to bring the situation under control, unidentified persons started pelting stones.

After ending a long-winded strike that wiped away several hundred crores in revenue for the film industry during the summer of 2018, the Tamil Film Producers Council had put forward a number of proposals in an attempt to reform the film industry — they identified computerised ticketing, additional entertainment taxes to GST and reducing the high rates charged by digital distribution companies.

However, many were pushing for one urgent reform: streamlining movie releases. In the last few years, a massive increase in the number of films releasing every year had resulted in clutter at the box office.
