1. Pongal Bonanza: Madras HC Restrains TN From Giving Cash Gift to All

In a major setback to the state government, the Madras high court has restrained distribution of Rs 1,000 as Pongal cash gift to a section of ration card holders.

Passing an interim order, a division bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam before which a petition by activist J Daniel Jesudass came up for hearing, said the Court was of the prima facie opinion that giving the Pongal cash gift to all the ration cardholders is nothing but a wastage of public money for non productive purpose.

2. DMK Vows Action on Jayalalithaa's ‘Mysterious’ Death If Voted to Power

DMK chief M K Stalin Wednesday said the 'mystery' over late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's death persisted and asserted that if his party was voted to power people found guilty of causing her demise would be put behind the bars.

Proper medical bulletins were not issued on her treatment and health condition, he said addressing people of a village here as part of the DMK's state-wide outreach programme of panchayats.

3. Tamil Nadu CM Petitioned to Reopen Sterlite Copper Plant

In a show of solidarity, a large number of people from Thoothukudi took out a rally and submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami seeking to reopen the Sterlite Copper Plant and obey the Supreme Court order.

They also presented 1,60,000 support letters to the Chief Minister requesting the plant be reopened.

5. Canal Clean Up: NGT Asks PWD to Submit Time-Bound Plan

The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to show cause why a performance guarantee of ₹10 crore should not be imposed on it within a month for failing to provide a time-bound action plan to clear the Buckingham Canal of encroachments and pollution.

The Principal Bench comprising Justice K Ramakrishnan, judicial member, and expert member Nagin Nanda directed the government to submit an action plan within a month on evicting encroachments, taking action against those polluting waterbodies and rehabilitating encroachers as part of the policy of the Government.
