1. Rupani and Gehlot Lock Horns Over Illicit Liquor, Police to Start Anti-Bootlegging Drive

Days after a spat between Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over alleged sale and consumption of illicit liquor in the prohibition state, the Gujarat police announced a week-long special drive in all districts and cities to check bootlegging.

A notification dated 9 October by the Deputy Police Superintendent (Control Room) Komal Vyas, at the behest of Director General of Police (DGP) Shivanand Jha, has asked all senior police officials in each district and city of the state to conduct a ‘special drive’ against bootlegging and gambling, from 10 October to 16 October.

According to the notification, all police officials have been asked to check listed bootleggers and gamblers in their respective areas and raid illicit liquor and gambling dens, which were active in the past or are active in present. Police must also identify places where illicit liquor is being manufactured, collected and sold.

2. Sub Inspector Stabbed by Bootleggers During Raid

A police sub-inspector posted at Ramol Police station was stabbed in his hand allegedly by two bootleggers during a raid in Amraiwadi area of Ahmedabad on Thursday night (10 October).

According to police, Sub-Inspector Arjun Bharwad, 27, in-charge of Surelia police outpost, and a Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) constable Manubhai were attacked by two alleged bootleggers near Kailash Colony Wonderpoint road CTM area in Amraiwadi at around 9.30 pm.

Bharwad, who sustained injuries on his left hand between his wrist and elbow, was admitted to LG Hospital for treatment. The two accused were identified as Ajit Vaghela and  Akshay Patel, both residents of Kailash Colony CTM in Amraiwadi. The duo are absconding.

3. Rajkot: Chief, 6 Firemen Injured in Blaze at Dye Factory

The chief fire officer of Rajkot and six other firefighters were injured, fighting a fire that broke out in a chemical dye manufacturing factory in Aji GIDC estate in the city on Thursday, 10 October.

The fire was reported at a unit of Polytech Paint of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation estate on Thursday afternoon. Firefighters responded to the emergency call and fire tenders rushed to the spot. Chief fire officer Bikhabhai Theba himself was leading the firefighting operation when some barrels of a chemical naphtha lying in the factory exploded.

“The hot fuel splashed on the chief fire officer and a few firemen. They have been rushed to Madhuram Hospital,” Zahidkhan Yusuf, Station officer of Bedipara fire station in the city, said. The condition of the injured is stable. “There are seven people who have received naphtha infoxication. All are stable, all are good. All are sailing smooth but we shall observe them for sometime,” Dr Hemang Vasavada of the Madhuram Hospital said.

4. 3 Medical Colleges Planned at a Cost of Rs 975 CR: Guj Dy CM

Gujarat will get three medical colleges in Narmada, Porbandar and Navsari at a total cost of Rs 975 crore under a Central government scheme to increase MBBS intake, deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said on Friday, 11 October.

Each college will have 100 MBBS seats and existing hospitals in these districts would be attached to them after upgrading them as per Medical Council of India norms, he informed.

"The Union government has identified 75 districts in the country having no medical college. Out of five districts selected from Gujarat, we have chosen Narmada, Porbandar and Navsari to build such colleges. We will send a proposal to the Centre to approve medical colleges in these three districts," said Patel.

5. To Be Developed Country, Sustainable Power Sector Must: Singh

India cannot become a developed country without a sustainable and viable power sector giving uninterrupted supply to people, Union minister RK Singh said on Friday, 11 October.

He was speaking at a function to inaugurate a two-day conference of power and renewable energy ministers of states and UTs in the Tent City in Kevadiya in Gujarat's Narmada district, a PIB release said.

The Union Minister of State for Power, New and Renewable Energy said, "A sustainable and viable power sector is a prerequisite for India to become a developed nation. India cannot become a developed country without a sustainable and viable power sector which supplies 24/7 power for all."
