1. Seven Assembly Seats, 2 Rajya Sabha Seats Vacant in Gujarat

The state will soon see by-elections in four Assembly seats after four MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) put in their papers as MLAs of the Gujarat Assembly on Thursday,6 June. Apart from the Assembly seats, the state will also see a battle for the two Rajya Sabha seats vacated by Amit Shah and Smriti Irani.

Shah had won the Gandhinagar seat while Irani won from Amethi. Three more Assembly seats — Talal, Morva Hadaf and Dwarka – are also vacant but are caught in a legal tangle.

With the resignation, the strength of the BJP in the assembly has fallen to 101. The seats that will see a bypoll for sure include Tharad, Kheralu, Amraiwadi, and Lunawada. Bharatsinh Dabhi from Kheralu vacated his seat after winning the Patan Lok Sabha seat while Prabhat Patel won Banaskantha and had to vacate the Tharad seat. It is speculated that former MoS Shankar Chaudhary would be given a ticket for Tharad during the by-polls.

To supply drinking water to Gondal and Jetpur talukas of Rajkot district, the state government has decided to pump 700 million cubic feet (mcft) water into Bhadar-I dam through pipeline network of Saurashtra Naramada Avataran Irrigation Yojana (SAUNI).

When water reaches Bhadar dam, it will be an important milestone for SAUNI project as it will mark the linking of Narmada dam with the second biggest reservoir of Saurashtra.

“The state government has given its approval to pump 700 mcft water into Bhadar dam to meet drinking water requirements of Gondal and Jetpur towns as well as dozens of villages in these talukas. We have been pumping water towards Bhadar dam since 8 May and water has already reached Gondal town. In fact the Veri Talav started overflowing at around 8 pm Thursday. The water will now flow towards Bhadar dam, filling up a few other check dams en route,” an officer of state irrigation department said, adding that they have increased the flow of water towards Bhadar dam after sanctioned amount was pumped into Aji and Nyari dams near Rajkot by using the same pipeline.
