1. PM Narendra Modi to Dedicate Salt Memorial at Dandi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Surat and Dandi on Wednesday, in what will be his second visit to the state in less than a fortnight.

Officials said that in Surat, the prime minister will lay the foundation stone for expansion of the terminal building at Surat airport. On completion, the terminal building will have a peak handling capacity of 1,800 passengers.

"The terminal building will be spread over 25,500 square metre and constructed at a cost of Rs 354 crore. It will be an eco-friendly sustainable building and will use solar energy and LED lighting," an official statement said.

2. Gujarat: Shankersinh Vaghela Joins NCP, Made General Secretary

Former Union minister and Gujarat CM Shankersinh Vaghela, who quit the Congress ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in July 2017, joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) here on Tuesday in presence of party chief Sharad Pawar. He has been made the party’s national general secretary.

Welcoming him to the party, Pawar said that the NCP will use Vaghela’s political experience and mass following in Gujarat as well as for strengthening the party at the national stage.

“I welcome him to the party. The party will immensely benefit from his vast political experience…. The NCP will use his experience at the national level, besides Gujarat, to facilitate strengthening and consolidating of the anti-BJP political forces to oust the BJP from power at the Centre,” Pawar said at the event which was also attended by senior NCP leader Praful Patel, Gujarat NCP chief Jayant Patel and NCP MLA from Kutiyana Kandhal Jadeja.

3. Stop Political Vendetta Against Ex-Dudhsagar Chief: Sharad Pawar

NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday warned that “political vendetta’’ against former chairman of Dudhsagar Dairy Vipul Chaudhary would hurt relations between Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Referring to an FIR filed against Chaudhary in connection with an alleged corruption case, Pawar said, “I appeal to the Gujarat government to not carry on political vendetta against former Dudhsagar diary chief Vipul Chaudhary… This is not a good thing. This is hurting relations between the two states — Gujarat and Maharashtra.”

Chaudhary, who is currently out on bail, is facing corruption charge in connection with the supply of cattle fodder worth Rs 22 crore to Maharashtra when he was the chairman of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 2012.

It has been alleged that he supplied cattle fodder to Maharashtra without taking approval from the GCMMF board. He was later sacked from GCMMF as well as Dudhsagar dairy.

4. Ahmedabad: Son of Police Constable, Friend Held for Fuel Theft

A complaint was lodged at the Madhupura police station on Monday, by a head police constable, who was working as the driver of the said van. He lodged the complaint after realising that someone was stealing fuel from the van that is parked in the Shahibaug Police headquarters.

Complainant Sarjitsinh Yadav said in his complaint that on Monday morning, at around 9 am, when he reached the Shahibaug headquarters to get the police van, he noticed the lock of the fuel tank was open and diesel had been stolen from the vehicle.

Yadav informed his senior officers about the incident. The officers reached the spot and started checking other vehicles. They later found out that fuel locks of four police vans were open and around 360 litres of diesel had been stolen.

5. Ahmedabad: Seven Get Jail for Duping Pnb of Rs 3.5 Cr

A special CBI court on Tuesday convicted seven persons for duping the Punjab National Bank of Rs 3.45 crore by taking car loans on forged documents between 2012 and 2013.

The court acquitted 54 other accused in the case on the grounds that there was no evidence against them.

Among the convicts are then branch managers Dhriti Nema, Santlal Dhala and Amarjit Chhahal, who were all posted at Sanjivani branch, Gurukul road in Ahmedabad. The four others have been identified as Pradhuman U Mehta and his wife Sonal, Vipul N Trivedi and Milan B Damania.

During the probe, CBI had found that Mehta and his wife, in collusion with the bank officers created bogus documents and got loans in the name of fictitious persons. The two faked vehicle registration certificate (RC) books and income tax returns to receive the loans.

6. Ahmedabad: VS Hospital Beds Decrease but Budget Increases

Mayor Bijal Patel, in his capacity as the chairperson of the hospital board, on Tuesday presented VS Hospital's budget. The budget has increased by Rs 58.66 crore over the proposed draft budget. Interestingly, the draft budget at Rs 172 crore was for 1,155 beds while the final budget allocation has been made for 500 beds, which now stands at Rs 231 crore.

"The draft budget was for 1,155 beds while we have proposed a budget for 500 beds, at an increase of Rs 58.66 crore. We are going to strengthen the existing structures of the hospital too," said Bijal Patel, mayor and chairperson of VS Hospital and Chinai Hospital.

When asked how, despite a decrease in the number of beds, the budget has increased by such a margin, she didn't provide a clear-cut explanation. It is to be noted that when the hospital's draft budget was presented by the superintendent on January 10, it was pegged at Rs 172 crore and had no mention of beds.

7. Gujarat: HC Admits MLA’s Plea Against Cancellation of ST Caste Certificate

The Gujarat High Court Tuesday admitted an appeal petition moved by Independent MLA Bhupendrasinh Khant challenging the order of a single bench of the High Court which had rejected his petition against cancellation of his caste certificate.

The division bench of acting Chief Justice Anant S Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav admitted the petition and have scheduled the hearing for February 26.

Last year, Khant’s certificate of ‘Hindu Bhill’ was cancelled by state tribal development commission against which he moved the High Court. A single bench of the High Court had upheld the decision of the commission and rejected his petition.

The court order stated that Khant’s mother belongs to Bhill tribal community while his father is from a non-tribal community which is Khant – Hindu Soni. It stated that in case of inter-caste marriage a child would acquire caste of his father.
