1. Industrial Accidents Killed 989 in 5 Years

In the past five years, as many as 989 workers died in accidents in industrial units in Gujarat. The districts of Surat, Ahmedabad and Bharuch, located on the “Golden Corridor” from Mehsana in the north to Vapi in the south, accounted for 42 per cent of the deaths of factory workers. A large number of these workers died in the industrial units of top companies such as Reliance Industries Limited, Tata Group, Essar Group, Nirma Limited and Welspun Group account.

Between 1 October, 2013 and 30 September, 2018, a total of 989 workers died in 895 industrial units registered under the Factories Act, the state government told the Gujarat Assembly earlier this year in a written response to an unstarred question asked by Congress MLA from Danilimda Shailesh Parmar. Gujarat has over 31,500 factories that employ more than 16.93 lakh workers.

The largest number of workers died inside industrial units in Surat district, 163, which alone accounts for 16.5 per cent of the deaths. Similarly, 133 workers died in Ahmedabad and 123 lost their lives in Bharuch.

2. It's a Rainy Week Ahead for Gujarat; Showers to Get Heavier

Spell of good rains continued in parts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat on Wednesday, 24 July. Heavy rains have been reported from south Gujarat in the evening. The weather department has predicted widespread rains in most parts of the state throughout the week, but the intensity of rain is likely to increase Sunday (28 July) onwards. On Monday, (29 July) in addition to south Gujarat and Saurashtra, parts of north Gujarat and Kutch are likely to receive heavy rains.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely at a few places in all the districts of South Gujarat region and Daman Dadara Nagar Haveli; at a few places in the districts of Saurashtra namely Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Porbandar, Amreli, Bhavnagar; at isolated places in the districts of Central Gujarat region namely Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Kheda and in Kutch district.

Dry weather very likely in remaining districts of North Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Diu for the most of the week, India Meteorological Department said in a forecast.

3. Surat Builder ‘Gets Extortion’ Call From Chhota Shakeel Aide

A Muslim builder of Surat who allegedly received a call a few days ago from a Chhota Shakeel aide Fahim Machmach asking him to pay Rs 1.50 crore or be killed has lodged a complaint with Surat city crime branch. The complaint was lodged on Monday evening.

On 16 July, Mumbai police arrested one Ahmed Raza Wadhariya from Mumbai international airport when he landed from Dubai. Police sources said that Ahmed Raza was working with Fahim Machmach, a close aide of underworld don Chhota Shakeel, and that an extortion complaint had been lodged earlier against Raza with Mumbai police. As Raza was in Dubai at the time, police had issued a lookout notice.

During Raza’s interrogation with Mumbai police, he revealed that he had also used Fahim Machmach to make a call to a Muslim builder of Surat to extort money from him. Mumbai police shared the information with Surat crime branch, who met the builder and assured him that nothing would happen to him. The builder, whose name has been kept under wraps by police, finally lodged a complaint against Ahmed Raza and Fahim Machmach.

4. BJP Objects to Congress Statement on Minorities' Safety in Gujarat

Introduction of a private member's bill on welfare and safety of minorities in the state saw some heated exchanges between the BJP and the Congress. The bill, introduced by Congress MLA Imran Khedawala, had several BJP MLAs jumping to the government's defense.

Khedawala sought creation of a separate commission for minority rights and a law against lynching in the state; he remarked about rising incidences of violence in Gujarat. BJP members told Khedawala that the state had not seen any major riots in over two decades and started protesting.

So much so, that the speaker had to intervene and remind the ruling party that the MLA had the right to express his opinion. BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama claimed that Khedawala's statement was aimed at disturbing the peace.

5. Youtuber, Aide Held After Parcel They Sent by Post Explodes

Three days after a parcel exploded inside a post office in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, a YouTuber accused of sending a parcel filled with inflammable substances, was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday along with his accomplice.

Police said 24-year-old Alpesh Parmar, a native of Anjar in Kutch, runs a YouTube channel named ‘Toys Technical’ which has over 72,000 followers, on which he uploads videos of air guns and illustrates their features to his followers, offering to sell them.

Police said that Parmar along with an accomplice Milap Varaiya (25), also a native of Anjar in Kutch, had purchased paper rounds filled with highly inflammable powder substances. The powder, which is also used in the manufacture of fire crackers, was filled in blank rounds which then creates a visual and sound effect in the air guns.
