1. Gujarat: Poor Infra in Shelter Homes, States Report

Following an earlier instruction of the Gujarat High Court, a report pointing out the poor state of infrastructure in shelters homes operated by the AMC was submitted before the court on Wednesday.

The report prepared by advocate KR Koshti was submitted based on his thorough inspection of two shelter homes in the city at Shahpur-Dudheshwar and Ghatlodiya.

The report provides that the shelter homes are not operated properly, with grossly inadequate facilities forcing the urban homeless to stay in an inhuman condition. Koshti has submitted that both the shelter homes in the city have an inadequate number of toilets as compared to their capacity as well as occupancy. Also, the blankets and sleeping mats are filthy and unsuitable for human use.

2. 10-Year-Old Boy Sodomised by Teenager at Pethapur Village

A 16-year-old boy has been booked for allegedly sodomising a 10-year-old boy at Pethapur village in Gandhinagar district on Tuesday. According to the FIR registered by the victim’s father at Pethapur police station, his son had gone have panipuri near the village barber shop.

The accused who works at the barber shop lured him with chocolates, took him to a secluded spot behind Pethapur government hospital and sodomised him.

The young boy returned home crying and narrated the entire incident to his father. Upon inspection, the father noticed that his son was bleeding and immediately took him to a nearby hospital for treatment. He then approached the police and filed a FIR under Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) against the 16-year-old.

The police sent the victim and the accused for medical examination to get medico-legal evidences about sodomy claims.

3. Stop Misuse of Public Funds for Temples in Surat: PIL

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the state government and Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) after public interest litigation (PIL) alleging misuse of public funds of around Rs 9 crore for construction of two temples in Vadi village of Surat came up for hearing.

The petitioner has claimed that TCGL had issued tenders for appointment of agencies for the development of Nirant Ramji Temple and Bhathiji Maharaj Temple at Vadi village for Rs 4.35 crore and Rs 4.44 crore, respectively, from the state coffers.

The petitioner has alleged that TCGL is controlled by state tourism minister Ganpat Vasava, who hails from the same village and has allegedly misused his office to utilise the funds for religious purpose against the constitutional mandate.

4. Cyber Crooks Try to Steal Rs 30 Lakh From Co-Op Bank’s Account

Cyber crooks on Tuesday, were successful in transferring Rs 10 lakh from the bank account of a co-operative bank by hacking its static IP address and username and password. However prompt action by the bank stopped the payment from reaching the destination bank.

Cyber cell officials who are helping local police in the case said they have tracked a man named Arjun Rana from Khanpur in Delhi and a team has been dispatched to the nation’s capital to arrest him. “We suspect he was part of the ring run by a Nigerian gang,” said a senior cyber official.

SM Patel, PI of Maninagar Police Station said, “Three attempts were made to steal a total of Rs 30 Lakh on 26,27 and 28 January.

5. Ahmedabad: Complex Had No Fire Safety Gadget

In January 2018, four people died of asphyxiation in a grocery shop located in Naranpura. The deceased had been living in the grocery shop at the time. The incident which took place on Wednesday is similar, with people staying in a commercial unit, although there were no casualties.

There were no checks conducted by the estate department, fire department or health department, at a place where there was a godown and coaching classes.

"Any such commercial unit needs to have clearances from different departments of the civic body. From the health department, it must acquire a non-hazardous unit certificate, after which the estate department gives clearance regarding structure and design as per the plan and then comes the fire department's approval," said a senior AMC official.

6. Four Including 2 Malaysians Convicted for Money Laundering

A special PMLA court in Ahmedabad has sentenced four persons, including two Malaysians, and a firm to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the convicts for money laundering linked to illegal possession of narcotic drugs, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Wednesday.

The court of special judge A C Joshi convicted Kirit Rasiklal Shah, Jagdish Vaidya, Gunasekaran Pillai, Ravindran Karapaya and the Sakha Organics, a Vadodara-based firm linked to them, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Pillai and Karapaya are Malaysian nationals. The ED, in a statement, said the court had also ordered "handing over" of the confiscated assets, worth Rs 71 lakh, in the case to the Centre. The agency had filed a case against the accused under the charges of money laundering, after taking cognisance of a complaint of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) that had seized methamphetamine (a recreational drug) from the four accused.

7. Rajasthan Seeks Gujarat Help for Renewable Power Push

Rajasthan's Congress-led government is impressed by PM Narendra Modi's home state Gujarat's frog leap in the renewable energy sector. The neighbouring state has, therefore, sought help from Gujarat government for guidance in renewable energy development and delegation from Rajasthan is likely to visit Gujarat next week.

High-level sources from Gujarat government informed, "Rajasthan government is keen to develop renewable energy to decrease their dependency over conventional sources of energy. This would again help them overcome the power crunch in the state. The delegation of the energy department of Rajasthan is likely to visit Gujarat next week."

"The Rajasthan state government is especially impressed with Gujarat government's initiatives like solar power policy and hybrid power policy that gives a boost to solar and wind power. Rajasthan also has the capacity to generate solar and wind power in desert areas. They are also keen to study the model of solar power generation scheme for farmers and individuals," the sources added.
