2. Ex-Congress MLA Joins BJP Ahead of Bypolls in Gujarat

Days ahead of the by-elections in half a dozen assembly seats in Gujarat, former Congress MLA Mavji Patel on Thursday, 17 October joined the ruling BJP, claiming he was feeling "ignored" in the opposition party.

In 1990, Mavji Patel had won from the Tharad assembly seat in Banaskantha district, which is one of the six constituencies going to bypolls on October 21.

The 68-year-old former legislator unsuccessfully contested the 2012 assembly polls from the seat and lost to BJP candidate Parbat Patel, who resigned as the MLA of Tharad after getting elected to the Lok Sabha in May.

Mavji Patel was reportedly unhappy ever since he was denied ticket by the Congress from Tharad in the 2017 polls. Mavji Patel joined the BJP at a poll rally in Tharad town in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Rupani was in Tharad to address an election rally in support of BJP candidate for the bypoll Jivraj Patel. Ahead of joining the BJP, Mavji Patel said he can do a lot of things for the people of Tharad by joining the ruling party.

3. Infiltrators Will Be Ousted From Country: CM Rupani

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani Thursday said that “infiltrators will be ousted from the country” and the task has already been started by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Assam. Rupani also reiterated that a grand Ram Temple will soon be built in Ayodhya as the hearing on the dispute is over in the Supreme Court and a verdict is expected next month.

Rupani was addressing an election campaign meeting at Radhanpur in Patan district from where former Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor is contesting on a BJP ticket. Radhanpur is one of the six assembly constituencies which are going to bypolls on October 21.

“(We want) to oust infiltrators from this country. The natives are deprived of their rights whereas the outsiders are enjoying everything. This has been done by the Congress so far for votes. But now, the infiltrators will be weeded out. This has already been started by Amitbhai (Union Home Minister Amit Shah) in Assam and it will be done in the coming days as well,” Rupani said.

Police in Navsari on Thursday morning (17 October) located and brought back an 18-year-old tribal woman and a 19-year-old Muslim man who had eloped and taken off to Bharuch. Vishwa Hindu Parishad members and gau-rakshaks, along with parents of the young woman, had caused a road block in the town on Wednesday evening, demanding that police track down the couple, failing which they would call for a shutdown in the town.

Police found the young couple in Jambusar taluka of Bharuch.  The  couple had eloped on 14 October.

Police said that when the family members realised that the young woman was missing and searched for her, some local youths told them that she was spotted sitting in an autorickshaw at Tighra checkpost in Navsari.

They then returned home to look for clues on where she might have gone, and found her mobile phone in her almirah. On checking her WhatsApp messages, they learned that she had been in a relationship with a Muslim youth.
