1. Ahmedabad Shivers at 12.1°Celcius

Even though the minimum temperature in the city was slightly up on Sunday, a change in the direction of wind left citizens seeking warmth in woollen clothes all day long. According to the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) the low temperatures will continue for the next few days.

According to the IMD Website, Ahmedabad recorded a maximum of 24.7°Celcius, 4° lower than normal and minimum of 12.1°Celcius, 1.2° lower than normal. Deesa in Gujarat recorded the lowest temperature of 7.6°Celcius followed by Gandhinagar at 11.2° Celsius, Bhuj 11.4° Celsius and Kandla at 11.6°Celcius.

According to the IMD the direction of the wind changed earlier from north-easterly to easterly in the last two days. These winds have amplified the impact of the cold.

2. Man Held With Rs 3.8 crore Demonetised Notes

Police seized around Rs 3.80 crore in demonetised currency notes here in the early morning Sunday and arrested a man. During a routine checking of vehicles in Rander locality, Rs 3.80 crore in the defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were seized from a car, said inspector R M Sarode.

Vishal Barad, who was carrying the cash, told police that he had collected it from a person in Vadodara, Sarode said. “He hasn't yet disclosed how he was going to utilise the scrapped notes,” the officer said, adding that he was put under arrest and further probe was on.

3. Adoptive Father Cannot Replace Biological Father on Birth Certificate: Court

A local court refused to replace the name of the biological father with the name of the adoptive father on a birth certificate, stating that the ‘legal right of a child to preserve his or her identity, including nationality, name and family relations as recognised by law.’

The court heard two different cases with the same request. In one case the petitioner who had divorced her first husband wanted to remove the latter’s name from their child’s birth certificate and add her second husband’s name. In the other case the petitioner wanted to replace her late husband’s name with her second husband’s name on the child’s birth certificate.

The Court quoted Madras High Court and said that assuming that the present couple calls it quits after a few years will the new husband’s name be added to the birth certificate.

4. TB Patient Slits His Throat in VS Hospital

A 35-year-old daily wager slit his throat in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) run VS Hospital on Saturday out frustration as he has been diagnosed with Tuberculosis for more than a year.

The deceased was identified as Dinesh Saragara, a resident of Jamalpur who earned his living as a daily wager in the cloth market. However, ever since he was diagnosed with TB he has been finding it difficult to make both ends meet.

According to his sister, Geeta Saragara, Dinesh’s respiratory condition deteriorated with each passing day and last week on Monday he was rushed to VS Hospital as he was unable to breath. He told her that he had lost all hope and the suffering had become unbearable.

5. 2 Accused in LRD Paper Leak Appear for GPSC Exam

Uttamsinh Bhati and Rajendersinh Vaghela who were accused in leaking the Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) Recruitment Exam appeared for GPSC exams for the post of deputy mamlatdar at two different exam centres in Banaskantha District, after the duo secured interim bails.

According to police sources the accused were taken in two different vehicles with police escort to the exam centres. Two policemen were also stationed outside the classroom where the duo appeared for the exam and were then returned to the Central Jail.

After the LRD exam debacle the police department took extra precautions during the GPSC exam and deployed security right from the printing press to the strong room; a police escort party was also provided while transporting the question papers to different exam centres.
