1. Ahmedabad Metro to Start Mid January

With the first three rake coaches shipped out of South Korea and expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on 2 January, the city’s first metro train will likely start operation in mid-January. Officials of Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) said that the coaches left the Hyundai Rotem Local Port in South Korea and will reach Mundra Port on 31 December.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first train that will run the six km stretch between Vastral Gam and Apparel Park in Maninagar. However, commuters will have to wait till after January as securing the safety certificate is expected to take time.

Officials said that the second train will arrive likely arrive by March end or early April and services on the second stretch from APMC to Motera will commence by April.

2. MEGA Issues Notice to IL&FS

The Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) issued a notice to IL& FS, asking them to immediately begin construction on the APMC to Motera corridor and make payments to the contractors who have stalled work there.

According to MEGA, contractors have stopped work on the corridor after IL&FS failed to pay them. MEGA has sought legal opinion and if the company fails to provide a satisfactory reply, MEGA will cancel its contract and award it to another agency.

3. DAIICT Student Hangs Himself in Hostel

A 20-year-old student of Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT) committed suicide on Friday as his body was found hanging from his hostel room ceiling. The deceased Yashpalsinh Chauhan hails from Simalwara in Rajasthan’s Dungapur district and was a second semester B-Tech student.

According to Gandhinagar police Chauhan ended his life when his roommate had gone home for vacations and a college staffer saw Chauhan’s body hanging from the ceiling at 8 am on Friday after which he informed the authorities.

No suicide note was found and according to the institute Chauhan was to leave for his native place on Friday along with his father who had met him on Thursday. According to sources Chauhan was a polite and brilliant student.

4. Bank Fined Rs 10,000 for Giving Man’s Account Statement to His Wife

The Ahmedabad Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum ordered the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) to pay Rs 10,000 to Dinesh Pamnani. Pamnani had sued the bank after the latter gave his bank details to his wife without his consent.

Pamnani argued that he is engaged in a matrimonial dispute which is being heard in the family court and his estranged wife could use the bank details against him in court. According to Pamnani, last year on 6 May, Rs 103 was deducted from his account. Two days later when he inquired with the bank he was informed that his wife Harshika had collected his bank statements.

Pamnani alleged deficiency of service and dragged the bank to the consumer court. However, the bank defended itself and said that Harshika had approached the bank as it’s client’s agent and there was no ill intent on the bank’s part.

5. Guj: Angadia Couriers Looted on State Transport Bus Mehsana

Unidentified robbers looted parcels of cash, gold and diamonds worth lakhs of rupees on a state transport bus on Mehsana-Ahmedabad highway in Gujarat Thursday night, police said. Deputy Superintendent of Police Manjita Vanzara said Friday that a complaint has been lodged with Langhnaj police station in Mehsana district and further probe was on.

“Some Angadia (courier) staff, who were carrying parcels of cash, gold and diamonds, were travelling by Palanpur-Ahmedabad bus. Nine robbers, disguised as passengers, had also boarded it,” said a Mehsana police official.

“When it reached near a water park after leaving Mehsana, one of the robbers put a gun to the driver's head and asked him to stop. Others snatched four parcels from Angadia couriers. Then the robbers got down and fled in a car," he said. One of the passengers then alerted the Mehsana police control room, he said.
