Lodged in the upper division cell of the Birsa Munda Jail in Ranchi, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad Yadav was served chapatti, dal and cabbage for dinner on the first night in prison, reported Hindustan Times.

The 69-year-old had undergone a heart surgery in 2014 and has ever since been on a strict diet. Worried about his dietary habits inside jail, Lalu's son Tejashwi Yadav had categorically asked the jail authorities to serve him chapattis instead of rice, according to the Hindustan Times report.

Laluji takes medicines throughout the day. He needs somebody by his side to assist him. I don’t know who is taking care of him in jail. Many leaders have travelled with him to Ranchi. I hope they are being allowed to meet him.

The Hindustan Times report said that Laluji also has access to one mosquito net, one newspaper, TV and home-cooked food.

The former Bihar chief minister was convicted in the 900-crore fodder scam case on 23 December. He had spent four months in the same jail in 2013 when he was convicted for a fodder fraud in Chaibasa Treasury.

Although the jail manual says visitors are not allowed to meet prisoners on Sundays, several party legislators had wanted to meet Laluji on Sunday, 24 December, but the jail authorities objected to it.

No visitors were allowed to meet him on Sunday. Visitors can meet him later, but only during visiting hours.

HT also reported that major rule violations were in news the last time he went to jail, and many party leaders and parliamentarians met him after the designated visiting hours.
