1. Vidyasagar Bust Vandalised In Calcutta

A group of BJP supporters tailing party president Amit Shah’s decorated truck broke into Vidyasagar College and smashed an Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar bust that has been there for at least 20 years.

The bust was inside a glass case in the college’s main office that houses an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and an administrative counter.

Principal Goutam Kundu, who said he was shocked while speaking minutes after the attack between 6:50 pm and 7:05 pm on Tuesday, described how a group broke open the gate and stormed the office and went for the glass case.

2. Cops Under EC, Questions On Road Show Drill

The College Street flare-up during BJP president Amit Shah’s road show could have been averted had there been proper planning on the part of police, a former Calcutta police commissioner has said.

The College Street-Bidhan Sarani stretch in north Calcutta has always been “vulnerable” to sudden outbursts, including political clashes involving college and university students.

Elaborate arrangements should have been made for Shah’s road show to avoid trouble, former police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee told The Telegraph on Tuesday evening.

3. Supreme Court Orders Bengal BJP Worker Release

The Supreme Court has directed the Bengal government to free a BJP worker arrested for posting on Facebook a morphed photograph of chief minister Mamata Banerjee but said the accused must apologise at the time of her release.

Although the top court said freedom of expression was non-negotiable, it drew a distinction between a “lay citizen” and a member of a political party, and took into consideration that the picture was shared when elections are taking place.

“Had she been a common citizen, there would have been no problem,” the court said, referring to the accused, Priyanka Sharma from Howrah.

4. 4,000 Flyers Stranded As Cyber Attack Led To Delay Of 30 Flights

A cyber attack led to the LAN shutdown at the Kolkata airport on Monday evening and blanked out airline check-in terminals, flight information display boards and CCTV surveillance, delaying 30 odd flights carrying over 4,000 passengers and forcing CISF to deploy additional personnel. It took IT experts more than nine hours to fix the problem and restart the system. Normal operations resumed around 2:30 am on Tuesday.

“Regular flight schedules were restored from early Tuesday morning. Around 40 engineers had to do rigorous trouble-shooting for hours to identify and isolate the problem from 5,000-plus end points spread across the entire terminal building. Thereafter, the local area network (LAN) was restored,” airport director Kaushik Bhattacharjee said on Tuesday.

7. Salt Lake Death Was Stray H1N1 Case: Docs

Doctors pointed out that the death of a 57-year-old homemaker from Salt Lake, who was diagnosed with swine flu last Sunday, was probably a stray case and the surge period for the virus was over. They, however, said people in the risk category should be on guard.

“Even a small infection can turn fatal for people with comorbid conditions and whose immunity is compromised. We suggest people above 65 years and those above 50, with conditions like COPD or on cancer treatment or steroid therapy be vaccinated,” said Dr Arindam Biswas, internal medicine specialist at RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences.
