1. Two Lakh People To Offer Namaz On Red Road Today

The namaz for Eid-ul-Fitr on Red Road will be offered at 9 am on Saturday. Qari Fazlur Rahman, the imam, who has been leading the prayers every year will start his sermon at 8 am. Close to two lakh people are expected to congregate like every year to listen to the sermon and offer their prayers.

“My message will be for universal peace and brotherhood. We must include everybody in our celebrations. Refrain from extravagance and share with those do not have the means to celebrate this festival,” said Rahman.

The namaz on Red Road is one of the biggest Eid congregations anywhere in the country. People who stay in far flung areas arrive at chand raat (the night when the crescent moon to celebrate Eid is sighted). Many people start from their homes early in the morning.

2. Kolkata Gets Hottest Day After Monsoon Sets In

The city recorded its hottest day of the year on Friday — with the maximum temperature soaring to 40°C — four days after the onset of monsoon. Scorching westerly winds from the northern states of Delhi, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh left the city singed even as monsoon currents remain stalled.

June’s first fortnight has been considerably warmer than the corresponding period in May, the peak summer month. It is a significant departure from the usual weather pattern of the region, said meteorologists.

3. Unhappy With Note Ban, Soumitra Tells BJP

Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee on Friday criticised demonetisation for having thrown up a "lot of practical problems", doing so when BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha visited him at home to seek support for Narendra Modi's re-election.

"One thing that did not make me happy was demonetisation. We faced such a lot of practical problems. It could be that it resulted in other benefits. I do not understand those things. I am no economist. But if a lot of currency goes out of circulation at one go, it causes problems," the 83-year-old recipient of the Legion d'honneur, one of France's highest honours, told the BJP leader.

Sinha, a former Bengal chief of the BJP, had asked Chatterjee if he was happy with the central government's functioning.

Pictures of a Class 8 girl during a dance performance in school were allegedly downloaded from the institute's public Facebook page by a former student and used to "cyber-stalk her" for a month, according to a complaint lodged by the parents.

"We have been told that she was targeted before the school closed for the summer vacation. She did not even know that a fake account featuring her pictures had been created on Facebook until some other students teased and taunted her," the principal of the south Calcutta school said.

The 13-year-old opened up to her parents just before the school reopened this week. Her parents sensed something was troubling her when she refused to return to school.

7. Suspension Bridge To Eco Park Leisure Island

The island in the middle of Eco Park's 112-acre span of water will be linked to its main section by a suspension bridge.

Someone wanting to visit the seven-acre island from Eco Park currently has to take a boat from the jetty near gate number 2. The island houses two restaurants, a glass house where conferences and meetings are held and cottages on the waterfront, where people can stay overnight.

A narrow wooden bridge also connects the island to one side of the park. This bridge can be reached by taking a left turn at gate number 1, around 200m after crossing the Westin Hotel while driving down the airport-bound flank of the Major Arterial Road.
