1. Before PM Session, Mamata Gift For Modi’s Wife

Mamata Banerjee, on her way to meet Narendra Modi in New Delhi, bumped into his wife Jashodaben at Calcutta airport on Tuesday, exchanged pleasantries and gifted her a sari, hours after the Bengal chief minister had wished the Prime Minister on Twitter on his birthday.

Jashodaben, who offered prayers on Monday at Asansol’s Kalyaneswari, was at the airport along with her brother and his wife when the Trinamul Congress chief walked up to her and greeted them warmly. Sources said Jashodaben and her family were en route to Ahmedabad.

Mamata, who had turned Jashodaben’s “plight” of being “abandoned” by her husband into a poll plank during the general election campaign, spoke to her for a couple of minutes.

2. Jurisdiction Wait For Rajeev Kumar & CBI

A district court on Tuesday denied interim protection to Rajeev Kumar but disallowed the CBI from arresting the former Calcutta police commissioner.

Through lawyers, Kumar had moved the North 24-Parganas district court at Barasat seeking interim protection from arrest. But judge Mohammad Shabbar Rashidi observed that his court had no jurisdiction to entertain the petition.

On the same ground, the court refused to entertain a CBI prayer seeking an order to arrest Kumar because of his alleged non-cooperation in the investigations into the Saradha deposit default case.

3. Mamata: Meeting With PM A Constitutional Obligation

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee left for New Delhi on Tuesday, a day before her scheduled meeting with the PM, in a bid to send an olive branch to the Narendra Modi government at least on governance despite the political differences.

The first such one-on-one between the two leaders after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls comes after Banerjee sought an appointment with the PM after giving a miss to a series of meetings, from NITI Aayog to Modi’s all-party meet on one-nation, one-poll in Delhi held after the government took office for the second time this May.

“The Centre is an elected government, so is the state government. Let us work together,” the CM said at Kolkata airport before leaving for the capital in the afternoon.

4. Car Hits Sergeant On Night Patrol

A sergeant of Kolkata traffic police was hit by a speeding car when he was busy trying to flag down a bike at the naka check point around 10:35 pm on Sunday at the Sulekha Crossing. He was admitted to Baghajatin hospital. He has been released but doctors have asked him undergo specific tests.

“I was on duty when I noticed a biker coming out of a bylane close to a jewellery store. As I approached the bike along with a couple of my men, I saw this blue colour car racing towards us. We thought it would slow down after noticing us. Instead, it drove straight into me. The driver reversed the car and hit me again. It seemed he was upset at being stopped from speeding even though we had not flagged it down,” recounted Raja Roy, who is posted with the Jadavpur police guard.

5. British Expert Begins Probe Into Bowbazar Subsidence Disaster

A probe has been initiated into the East-West tunnelling disaster on 31 August. British tunnelling expert Charles Mann has been flown from Myanmar to conduct this third party inquiry.

The probe report could take a while because the most conclusive answer lies within Chundee, as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) digging the west-bound tunnel. Extensive grouting (injection with cement, water and sand) for concreting the ground to prevent water seepage, has rendered Chundee defunct. The 450-tonne machine will have be cleaned to understand what could have gone wrong.
