1. Economics And Sport Leave Mamata ‘Overjoyed’

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday reacted with jubilation over the two developments that brought cheer to people from Bengal all over the world, taking to the social media to congratulate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and Sourav Ganguly.

The chief minister hailed the news of Banerjee being named one of the three winners of the Nobel Prize in economics this year and that of the ascent of Ganguly to the helm of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“All days are special. Some days are more special than others. I’m feeling overjoyed today. The Pujos were a grand celebration of Bengali spirit. Celebrations continued today with two pieces of great news from two vastly different disciplines: sports & economics,” she posted on Facebook.

2. Never Thought He Would Win The Award So Young, Says Proud Mom

A brilliant student who never ranked first in school, a bits-and-pieces sportsman, an ace cook, a complete family man and an economist by accident — that is how Nirmala Banerjee, 83, describes her elder son, Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee.

“I am elated and, at the same time, surprised,” said Nirmala. “He has always been brilliant, but I had never thought he would bag the honour at such a young age. It’s a proud moment not only for me but for the entire nation.” She was reading a book when her younger son, Aniruddha, who stays in Gurgaon, called her up and broke the news. “It was all over the news channels,” said the proud mother, holding a bouquet and tray of sweets sent from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s office.

3. With Two Out Of Two Eco Nobels, Proud Presidency Erupts In Joy

As the news broke, Presidency – which has now produced both of India’s economics Nobel winners – was being talked of as “the college Abhijit Banerjee almost didn’t attend”. But the campus was bursting with joy at the feat of its famous alumnus.

Abhijit, who on Monday joined Amartya Sen in the hallowed ranks of economics Nobel laureates from Presidency College (now Presidency University), had initially joined the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute, but left it after a week to pursue economics at Presidency, where his father, Dipak Banerjee, taught the subject.

“We are overjoyed,” said Presidency vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia. “It is surreal — two Indians getting the economics Nobel from the same alma mater.”

4. When Esther Duflo Fell In Love With The Crumbling Palaces of Kolkata

French economist Esther Duflo, who shares the Nobel Prize in Economics with husband Abhijit Banerjee and fellow researcher Michael Kremer, believes Kolkata should preserve its buildings that lend the city its unique character, retain the sheer madness that is visible in public life to wow Western tourists.

In an interaction with TOI during a trip to Kolkata four years ago, Duflo had said the city needed to recognise its potential as a tourist attraction and preserve precincts in north, central and south Kolkata where neighbourhoods still retained old buildings that were architecturally distinct.

“Investing in preserving these localities can be financially rewarding,” she said. To buttress her point, she pointed to Prague where a major restoration project had unfolded after the end of Communism. “Many things old — trams, building facades and bridges — were restored. It has paid dividends. Today, Prague is top-draw tourist destination. Kolkata has the potential to become a Prague,” she had said.

5. Trinamool Leader Lynched In East Midnapore’s Moyna

A former Trinamool gram panchayat member was beaten to death in broad daylight on Monday in East Midnapore’s Moyna, with the party blaming BJP workers for the murder.

Basudeb Mandal’s killing was the second such incident in the district in recent weeks after a Trinamul working president in Tamluk, Kurban Shah, was killed inside a party office.

Mandal was stopped near Anwari village of Moyna while he was on way home on a bike, and beaten to death with sticks and spears. A civic volunteer first found him on the road with numerous injuries. Mandal was declared dead on arrival at the Tamluk Sub-divisional Hospital.

“It was afternoon and the roads were deserted. We suspect Mandal was stopped and dragged to a nearby paddy field where he was beaten to death,” said a police officer.
