1. Claim Of ‘Cut Money Refund’

Trinamool booth committee president in Birbhum has “refunded” what villagers claim is “cut money” to the tune of Rs 2.28 lakh, handing them Rs 1,617 each, in possibly the first instance of a ruling party leader paying up since Mamata Banerjee’s message of returning money allegedly taken as cuts.

The group of 141 said Trilochan Mukherjee hired a local dhaki (drum beater) to go around Chhatra under the Koma gram panchayat in Suri II block, proclaiming he would distribute “last year’s pending wages” under the 100-day job scheme, MGNREGA, on Tuesday. They were asked to gather at a water tank to receive the payments.

Asked, Trilochan insisted “he had not refunded cuts, simply distributed the wages of the workers”.

2. Taunted Over Skullcap And Pushed Out Of Train In Calcutta

Hafiz Mohammed Shahrukh Halder, 23, has for five days not dared to travel to the madarsa in Hooghly, where he is a teacher of Arabic — still scared after a mob set upon him on a train on 20 June allegedly demanding that he chant “Jai Shri Ram”.

Shahrukh, a resident of Canning in South 24-Parganas, was hit on his right eye, his kurta was torn and he was pushed out of the train at Park Circus station, allegedly by members of the Hindu Samhati, a far-right organisation that describes itself as non-political.

“I am still scared. The youths had scarves around their heads that had the word Hindu Samhati written on it. They kept asking me why I was sporting a skullcap, why I had a long beard, why I was wearing a kurta. ‘You can’t wear all these. Jai Shri Ram bol’, they said,” Shahrukh told The Telegraph on Tuesday. “There were some 20-25 of them in the compartment.”

3. Another Class 10 Student Slashes Wrist In School Loo

A Class 10 student of a reputable south Kolkata school tried to kill herself in the school washroom on Tuesday, but was prevented by the alertness of the authorities.

Amake keu bhalobashe na (No one loves me)”, the student, who is being treated for depression, said when asked why she had tried to hurt herself.

She tried to kill herself in a fashion similar to the method used by Krittika Paul, a student at GD Birla Centre for Education, who ended her life last Friday in her school’s washroom. Krittika had slashed her wrists and covered her head with a plastic bag. The autopsy revealed that she asphyxiated herself to death, as the cuts on her wrists weren’t deep enough.

4. Treasury Benches Empty, Free Run For ‘Graft’ Fire

Treasury benches were virtually empty in the Bengal Assembly on the third day of the monsoon session on Tuesday, giving the Opposition a free run in hitting out at the Mamata Banerjee administration over the cut-money row.

“Look at our side. All the benches are empty… There is hardly anyone of significance on the treasury benches,” said a Trinamool MLA.

A handful of ministers, including Partha Chatterjee, Subrata Mukherjee, Javed Khan, Shashi Panja, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Tapas Roy, Ashis Banerjee and Sujit Bose were seen on Tuesday. But except Panja, Khan, Banerjee and Bhattacharya, most others were not seen through the day.

Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on this day in 1975, which was in effect till 21 March, 1977.

“Today is the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a ‘Super Emergency’. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country,” she tweeted.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, TMC national spokesperson Derek O’Brien, too, referred to it as the “the darkest day of India”. He said: “Democracy was strangled, misused, and two years later, the people of India gave a fitting reply to those who strangled and mutilated democracy.
