1. Congress Leader Arrested For Social Media Posts

Sanmoy Banerjee, a state unit spokesperson of the Congress, was arrested by Purulia police in the early hours of Friday from his Agarpara home near Calcutta on the charge of circulating “objectionable” content on social media against the Bengal government and chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sanmoy, a four-term councillor of the Panihati municipality who unsuccessfully contested the Panihati Assembly seat as a Left-backed Congress candidate in 2016, was arrested in connection with a complaint lodged with the cyber crime wing of Purulia police by a local advocate, police sources said.

2. ED Quizzes KKR CEO, IRS Officer In Rose Valley Case

The investigation into the Rose Valley Ponzi firm money trail went deeper on Friday with the Enforcement Directorate questioning IRS officer Neeraj Singh and Venky Mysore – the CEO and MD of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Red Chillies Entertainment.

Their statements, sources said, are crucial in tracing how the Rose Valley money was siphoned off.

3. Rajeev Kumar Attends CID Office, Takes Stock Of Crucial Probes

Rajeev Kumar, the additional director general of Bengal CID, on Friday attended office at the state investigating agency’s headquarters at Bhabani Bhaban. Kumar, who was granted anticipatory bail by the Calcutta high court earlier this month, held marathon meetings with the top brass throughout the day.

After he went on leave, Kumar was first seen at CID’s Bhabani Bhaban office for a brief while on 3 October. On Friday, he reached office before 11 am and stayed back till later afternoon.

4. Don’t Bring Politics To Campus, JU Profs Tell Their Chancellor

Administrators and senior teachers at Jadavpur University said it ill behoved governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to criticise the state government and its ministers from the university’s platform and make political statements inside the campus soon after the conclusion of the court meeting, the university’s highest statutory body.

The governor should have restricted himself to matters related to the proceedings of the court meeting and academic-related issues, they said, pointing out that making political statements or criticising political figures from the forum of the university undermined the dignity of the institution.

5. Saffronisation Cry At Visva-Bharati

Visva-Bharati will next week jointly organise a workshop with the Rashtriya Kala Manch, a wing of RSS-backed student outfit ABVP, triggering cries of “saffronisation” and a boycott call from sections of students.

The workshop, to be jointly organised by the Manch and the central university’s Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication, is the first official programme of Visva-Bharati involving a political outfit. The event, titled “National Art-Cultural-Communication Workshop”, will be held at the Lipika Auditorium on the varsity campus between 21 and 23 October.
