1. BJP Snatches First Zilla Parishad in Bengal
The BJP on Monday, 24 June, bagged its first zilla parishad in Bengal by getting on board most members of the Trinamool Congress-run rural body in South Dinajpur.
“There are 18 seats in the South Dinajpur zilla parishad. We have 10 elected members, including the sabhadhipati, with us. Four more members are with us, but they could not come here and formally join our party,” BJP leader Mukul Roy said at the induction programme organised at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
In the 2018 elections, all the 18 seats had gone to Trinamool.

2. BJP Vows Yogi ‘Model’ In Bengal On Encounters
The BJP on Monday promised a ‘UP-like encounter model for Bengal’ if the party won power in the state, with two senior state leaders vowing to replicate the Yogi Adityanath regime’s iron-fist approach to law and order.
“After we come to power in Bengal, we would give 72 hours to the state police to arrest all criminals or tell them to surrender. If the police fail, they would be given orders to encounter these criminals, like it is done in Uttar Pradesh,” state BJP general-secretary Sayantan Basu said in Basirhat, North 24-Parganas.
General-secretary Raju Banerjee echoed the view in Bankura. “Once we come to power, we will order the police to arrest criminals, and, if required, follow the UP model of encounters,” said Banerjee.

3. Helmet Campaign By Calcutta Police With Leaflets In Bengali, Hindi And Urdu
Calcutta police are distributing leaflets in Bengali, Hindi and Urdu urging bikers to wear helmets and reminding them that they needed to wear the headgear for their own sake.
Officers said the leaflets were being distributed in those areas where violations were most rampant.
Aap apna khayaal rakhiyega, Sar pe helmet daal rakhiyega (Take care of yourself, keep the helmet on your head) – the Urdu leaflet reads.
The Bengali leaflet reads “Mathaay rakhben,” which has a double meaning – “keep in mind” and “keep (the helmet) on the head”.
The Hindi leaflet says: “Pehenna mat bhulein (don’t forget to wear)”.
This is the first time the Calcutta traffic police are distributing leaflets across the city with special emphasis on areas where bikers are often spotted violating traffic rules.

4. Police Look Into Krittika’s Recent Behaviour To Find Suicide Motive
The police team probing the suicide of Class X student Krittika Paul inside her school has now begun an attempt to ascertain the teenager’s recent behaviour, which culminated in the tragedy. Those the police are reaching out to include handwriting experts and counsellors, as well as her tuition teachers.
The cops are now convinced what many in Krittika’s close circle had believed from day one of the incident – the first two pages of the suicide note had been written well ahead of the last page.
“The final page, for that matter, is a typical suicide note,” noted an investigator. Experts claimed that the first part – written some time before committing the act – contains more on her outlook to life, and hence, is more mature and composed.

5. Trans Couple to Tie the Knot in Social Ceremony
It all started three years ago when Dipan Chakraborty visited SRS Solutions Kolkata at Agarpara, which provides medico-legal services to transgendered/transsexual individuals. It was there where he met Tista Das.
Das (38), a transwoman, was a consultant and guide at the centre and there was an immediate connect between the two. What started as friendship developed into a love story during Dipan’s sex reassignment surgery (SRS) process.
Taking their relationship a step forward, the duo announced their engagement through a social networking site on 15 April (National Transgender Day of Visibility), and is all set to tie the knot on 5 August.

6. Mom Shoots Gun-Toting Son To Save Self, Daughter-in-law
In a bid to save herself and her daughter-in-law from being shot, a 60-year-old mother shot at her son, critically injuring him, at Nandalal Mitra Lane in Howrah’s Salkia on Monday morning.
The mother, Renu Sharma, was arrested while her son Manoj, 31, was taken to a Howrah hospital and shifted to SSKM Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
Police recovered two 7mm unlicenced pistols from Manoj, who owns and drives a truck and a taxi. He told police that he bought those weapons for his own security as he often drives his truck at night.

7. Inter-Faith Meet On Crime Against Women
Indian Pluralism Foundation (IPF), in collaboration with the International Justice Mission (IJM), organised an inter-faith dialogue in Kolkata recently to address the issue of violence against women and children to create safer communities.
The gathering of faith leaders was based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the UN, primarily, SDG #16 that calls for sustainable development to provide access to justice for all and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.
Dignitaries present at the programme were Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture publication wing’s monk-in-charge Swami Tadvratananda; Nakhoda Mosque head cleric Maulana Shafique Qasmi; Archbishop Thomas D’Souza; Ganga Sagar Math priest and head Swami Giri Surya; Shia Community head cleric Maulana Abbas Rizwi; Sant Kutiya Gurdwara executive member Tarsem Singh; Madrasa Azmatia head Qari Fazlur Rahman; Gurudwara Bara Sikh Sangat vice-president Ajit Singh; Jewish Community Affairs general secretary AM Cohen; and Roman Catholic Archdiocese vicar general Dominic Gomes.
“Our goal is to empower the community to stand against violence,” said Rahman.
