1. TMC Leader Shot Dead in Murshidabad, Youth Leader Shot at in Madhyamgram

A 55-year-old TMC leader was shot dead inside the party office in Murshidabad district on Monday night. In a similar incident in North 24 Parganas district, TMC district youth president Vinod Singh and his associate Dipak were shot at from a close range inside the party office in Madhyamgram.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Murshidabad TMC leader, identified as Nimai Mondal, Pradhan of Bali gram panchayat in Nowda police station area.

2. Smriti Slams Mamata for Opposing NRC

Union minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday lambasted chief minister Mamata Banerjee for opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC), asserting the Narendra Modi government was committed to protecting the rights of every citizen and that illegal immigrants would be “dealt with accordingly”.

Addressing a news conference here on the completion of 100 days of the second term of the Modi government, Irani said there would be no compromise on the question of infiltrators.

3. Duped With Job Promise in Salt Lake

A woman was arrested from Bangalore for allegedly posing as a Canadian embassy official and duping a jobseeker in Baguiati of Rs 7.5 lakh, police said on Tuesday.

Dacosta Modupeoluwa Oriyomi, 27, who hails from Abeokuta in southwest Nigeria, had got in touch with the Baguiati resident and pretended to be an official of the Canadian embassy after he uploaded his resume on various job portals two years ago, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said. Oriyomi offered to help the man bag a job and settle down in Canada with his family.

4. Monsoon Gap Gets Narrower in Calcutta

September has picked up the rain baton from where August had left it.

The first nine days of the month have seen some rain, taking the total count past 125mm and bringing down the monsoon deficit considerably.

Tuesday, however, remained dry with the mercury touching 34.2 degrees, two notches above normal. The relative humidity was above 90 per cent for much of the day, making it hot and uncomfortable.

With two-thirds of the month still left, the number of rainy days is likely to go up, weather officials said.

5. Bijon Setu Check-Up Put Off

A proposal to study the health of Bijon Setu over the weekend has been scrapped because police have raised objections fearing the traffic mess it would create ahead of Calcutta’s biggest shopping season.

A section of engineers, however, questioned the decision to prioritise shopping over the safety of thousands of commuters.

The Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the custodian of the flyover that connects Kasba with the Gariahat area, had sought a shutdown of the corridor from Friday night till early on Monday because of a load test.
