3. Sovan Chatterjee Cries Security Withdrawal

Former Calcutta mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who had joined the BJP on Wednesday, claimed in a mail to Calcutta city police commissioner Anuj Sharma on Sunday that his security had been “suddenly withdrawn”.

Chatterjee, who said he used to get Y plus security, requested the police commissioner to deploy adequate security to him. However, sources in the city police said security for Chatterjee had been “scaled down”. They, however, refused to elaborate.

Chatterjee alleged in his letter that the police had “suddenly withdrawn” his security personnel without intimation on Saturday and blamed it on the Mamata Banerjee government’s “vindictiveness”.

4. NGOs Offer Help to Evicted Couple in Jagatdal

Several NGOs on Sunday offered succour to the elderly Muslim couple sheltered at a police camp in Jagatdal after being allegedly thrown out of their home by their landlord because of their religion three days after the general election results.

Clothes, food and household items were handed over to Aziz Mia, 85, and Hasina Bano, 60, at the Babu Quarter — an abandoned godown — in the North 24-Parganas town.

The couple have been housed there after being rescued by police on Friday night amid torrential rain from a railway platform where they had spent 82 days since being allegedly driven out of their rented home of four decades on 26 May.

5. Elephant Kills Lalgarh Homemaker

A 47-year-old homemaker was trampled to death by an elephant in a Lalgarh forest early on Sunday morning.

Bhadu Kalsa, a resident of Dantikari village, was attacked when she suddenly came face to face with a herd of about a dozen in a sal forest around 4am, local people said. One of Bhadu’s neighbours, Shibram Mahato, 57, said he and several others from the hamlet had stepped out for work or other chores when they heard a scream.

“It was around 4 am. It was raining and dark. We heard a scream and ran in that direction. We saw Bhadu run as fast as she could. Soon, we were terrified to see a big elephant chasing her. But Bhadu could not escape. The elephant pushed her to the ground and trampled her,” said Shibram.
