1. Rush to Open Bridges in Run-Up to Puja

If Puja means a rush to shop, followed by pandal-hopping, this year’s festive run-up has also brought on a rush to open bridges and flyovers.

Officials of the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) said work was on in full swing to make at least four bridges operational before Puja. Metro takes stock.

2. Displaced Bowbazar Duo Die at Hotels

Two elderly women from Bowbazar’s Syakrapara Lane died late on Tuesday at separate hotels, where they had been staying with family members since being evacuated from their homes on September 1.

Anjali Mullick, 87, and Ganesh Prasad Gupta, 86, suffered cardiac arrest and died after being admitted to a private hospital on Lenin Sarani. Their families blamed the condition of the hotel rooms and quality of food for their deaths.

3. Stiff Road Fines Won’t Be Enforced in State: Mamata

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2019 would not be implemented in Bengal, saying the stiff penalties mentioned in the central law would put additional burden on the people.

“We are not implementing the act. We feel that it is very harsh. We are focussing on our Safe Drive, Save Life campaign. The programme has brought down the number of accidents in the state,” Mamata said at a news conference in Nabanna.

4. Child-Lifting Rumours: One Lynched in Asansol, Cops Rescue Another in Cooch Behar

A man was lynched in Asansol subdivision early on Wednesday morning after local residents suspected him to be a child-lifter. In a separate incident, a mentally-challenged man was beaten up by residents at Dinhata in Cooch Behar district, also on the suspicion that he is a child-lifter.

According to police, rumours of child-lifters on the prowl had been doing the rounds in Salanpur village in Asansol subdivision of West Burdwan district. Around 6 am on Tuesday, local residents saw a man loitering in the area, suspected him of being a child-lifter and assaulted him, said police. When a police team rushed to the spot, the local residents started heckling them.

5. This Puja, Pray to Goddess Online

A facility that was so far available only in big temples like Tirumala Tirupati or Siddhivinayak Ganapati is coming to city pandals during Durga puja.

Festival Experientia, a private company, has tied up with three community pujas — FD Block, Ahiritola and Chakraberia Sarbojanin — to allow one to offer puja virtually.
