A group of men and women from a Chetla slum allegedly stormed into Tollygunge police station on Sunday night and assaulted a constable in public view after a youth from the locality was booked for drinking in the open and creating a nuisance on the footpath opposite Menoka cinema.

Two persons have been arrested for the mob attack.

2. Mamata Fears Durga Puja Tax Net: Dilip Ghosh

Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Monday alleged that Mamata Banerjee was protesting against income tax notices to Durga Puja organisers because of her fear that IT probes would expose the nexus between chit fund firms and puja committees headed by Trinamul leaders and ministers.

“Didi is not worried about the religious aspect of Durga Puja. If she was so serious about Durga Puja, then we would not have had to move the high court to seek permission for timely immersion of the idols. It is all about her party men’s direct involvement in channelising the chit fund money into several Durga Puja committees. She is scared that all this will be out if tax authorities probe the books of the puja committees,” Ghosh told a news conference in Calcutta.

5. Call for 100-Day Jobs in Tea Sector

Prabhat Bezboruah, the chairman of the Tea Board of India, has written to Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, seeking the Centre’s 100-day work scheme in tea gardens and earmarking of 20 per cent of plantations for alternative purposes.

In his letter sent on August 2, Bezboruah said the 100-day work scheme could be extended to tea estates in such a way that labourers would get benefits during winter when there is no tea production.

“He also said gardens should be allowed to launch alternative projects like industrial and food parks and around 20 per cent of the land can be set aside for such purpose. However, in case an estate goes for such a venture, it will have to ensure that the permanent employment generated thus is 150 per cent of jobs in the plantation,” said a source.
