1. Bengal Government Lawyers Boycott Calcutta High Court Judge

The Bengal government’s panel of lawyers in Calcutta High Court, including advocate general Kishore Dutta, boycotted the court of Justice Samapti Chatterjee on Monday, 22 July, saying the judge was not hearing their submissions properly.

Justice Chatterjee said in an open court that she wasn’t bothered with the boycott.

“The state panel lawyers have decided not to attend this court. Through this decision, the state lawyers have done injustice to this chair. They have lodged a written complaint before the chief justice against me. I don’t bother. The state lawyers did not assign me to hear municipal cases. The chief justice has ordered me to hear the cases,” she said.

2. Mamata Slams Durga Puja Tax

Mamata Banerjee on Monday criticised the Centre over income tax notices to several Durga Puja organisers in Bengal, asserting that those who held such religious events should not be taxed and accused the BJP of insulting the festival.

“When the elections come, they get busy in communal politics. A festival is always a festival. I will simply say if a party uses funds for elections, that is not under income tax. Funds used by the Puja committees should not come under income tax,” the chief minister told a news conference at Nabanna on Monday.

3. Actor Swipe at Mamata Over Cut Money

Tollywood actor Rudranil Ghosh, known for his proximity to the Trinamool Congress, on Monday criticised Mamata Banerjee and her party over the “cut money” controversy, a day after his absence from the Martyrs’ Day rally.

“She (Mamata) herself brought cut money into the lexicon and people have been returning money every day. That is creating a perception in the people that this party clearly — perhaps — runs on cut money,” he said in an interview to ABP Ananda.

Trinamul secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said the party would listen to what Ghosh had to say. “He is not going anywhere. We will listen to him and take his opinion.”
