1. Trinamool MLA, 11 Councillors From Bongaon Join BJP Camp

Trinamool Congress MLA from Bongaon North Biswajit Das joined BJP along with 11 councillors of the 22-member Bongaon municipality on Tuesday. The development, incidentally, came on a day chief minister Mamata Banerjee was holding a meeting of councillors to contain desertions that have become endemic in North 24 Parganas, with the majority of councillors from Bhatpara, Kanchrapara, Naihati, Halisahar and Garulia municipalities taking the BJP flag.

Das’s switchover is the fifth instance of an MLA dumping Trinamool to join BJP after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Besides Das, the other MLAs who have joined the saffron camp are Tushar Kanti Bhattacharya, Debendranath Roy, Monirul Islam and Sunil Singh.

2. Bengal Congress Pins Hope on Adhir post

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s appointment as the Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday came as a shot in the arm of the beleaguered Bengal unit of the party that has seen a steady decline in its support base in recent years.

The Behrampore MP’s elevation to the key post brought cheers to the Bengal Congress even as some state leaders wondered whether it would result in any tangible gains for the state unit. The Congress won only two Lok Sabha seats in Bengal.

“We are all happy for Captain, as this is a supreme recognition of his struggle,” said the Congress’s Behrampore MLA Manoj Chakraborty, one of Chowdhury’s most trusted lieutenants.

3. Didi Sets Deadline For ‘Deserters'

Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday set a seven-day deadline for the “greedy and corrupt” in the Trinamool Congress to leave for the BJP, which she accused of “gathering garbage”.

The Trinamul Congress chief, who held a meeting here with the party’s councillors at municipalities across Bengal, said she was planning to undertake a thorough cleansing of the organisation by replacing “traitors” with dedicated workers.

“We are discarding garbage and the BJP is gathering it. I would like to request the traitors who remain undecided on leaving or staying: please leave within seven days. For every one such person, we will get 500 more. We will restructure our party by replacing the greedy and corrupt with dedicated workers,” Mamata said at the meeting at Nazrul Manch.

4. Mamata To Skip Modi Meet

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has informed the Centre that she will not take part in a meeting of heads of all political parties in New Delhi on Wednesday.

She conveyed her decision in a letter to Union parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi, who had sent the invitation to Mamata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the meeting that has been convened to discuss four major issues — one country one election, development of “aspirational” districts, celebration of 75 years of Independence and Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary and improve the productivity of Parliament.

5. ‘Will Have Regular Meets To Keep Tabs On Assurances Made By CM’

After the deadlock was broken following the meeting with chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, junior doctors returned to work with renewed vigour on Tuesday. Archisman Bhattacharjee, one of the prominent faces of the agitation, started his day by making the rounds of his department—chest medicine—at Medical College and Hospital (MCH). The first-year post-graduate student then went to the transfusion medicine department to donate blood for children suffering from thalassaemia.

“All of us resumed immediately after we announced the end of the cease-work. In addition to attending to patients, we will have regular meets to follow up on and track the implementation of the assurances made to us,” said Bhattacharjee, who completed his MBBS from NRS Medical College.

6. Biker Gang Chases, Harasses Model; Cops Bicker Over Area

A gang of 10 bikers chased around Kolkata-based model Ushoshi Sengupta’s app cab through the streets of south Kolkata and abused and molested her — not once but twice — late on Monday night. The last round of harassment occurred after cops at a police station “refused to register her complaint” but, instead, referred her to the “right police station”.

Sengupta posted a 20-second video of the incident, which she managed to take in between trying to save herself, around 2.30 pm on Tuesday. The post got over 3,000 comments and 4,000-plus shares, underlining what Kolkata’s netizens felt about the incident.

The social media uproar spurred the Kolkata Police brass into action and, by Tuesday evening, cops had picked up seven of the youths from a locality near Navina cinema on Prince Anwar Shah Road and charged them with various sections that included molestation and causing hurt using dangerous weapons.
