1. Flu Makes Kids Take Exams In Sickbay

The post-winter mercury fluctuation has turned out to be a worry for students gearing up for board and annual exams later this month. Thousands are suffering from fever, chicken pox and other change of-season diseases, triggered by viruses that turn active in the prevailing weather conditions. With less than a week to recover, many are anxious about being able to get fit in time for the ensuing tests.

Soham Dey, a Class IX student at Baranagar Modern School, is down with chicken pox since last week. His annual exam commenced on Monday. Dey took his geography exam three days after he was diagnosed with a ‘viral infection’ despite being groggy and sluggish. “It was only on Friday my parents noticed the rashes and suspected chicken pox. We consulted a doctor who confirmed it and prescribed medicines. As I’m in the middle of my exams, I’m trying to avoid medicines which could make me feel drowsy. Though I’m feeling weak, I’m determined to take the exams. Somehow, I’ve managed to do last minute revisions,” said Dey, after his first exam.

2. Trump Jr Woos Tower Customers, Honchos

Unperturbed by criticism in the US over the Trump Tower sales drive in India, a dapper Donald Trump Jr charmed a select audience comprising customers of the upcoming Trump Tower Kolkata and real estate honchos at a gala dinner on Tuesday.

Clad in dark suit with a mauve tie, Trump Jr emerged from the Boeing 757 private jet, emblazoned with the family name, at 8.54pm, over an hour behind schedule, and dived into an armoured white SUV that drove right up to the flight stepladder. He then proceeded to the venue under Secret Service cover, with additional security from Special Protection Group, National Security Guard and Kolkata Police commandos.

At the hotel, the crowd broke into an applause when he strode in at 9.38pm. Trump Jr congratulated those who had already booked apartments in the project that carries the super luxury Trump brand. The Rs 600-crore 39-storey property being co-developed by Trump Organisation’s Indian representative Tribeca, Unimark and RDB, is trumpeted as a trophy asset.

3. Activists Go Online To Stop Torture On Strays

A stray dog was brutally killed by some people in Titagarh early this month. Twenty-two stray dogs were found dead on a single day in Baranagar in January last year.

A woman in Garfa was heckled when she protested after a car hit a mongrel in December last year. A group of “animal lovers” in Kolkata have now initiated an online petition to garner support among netizens for prevention of cruelty against animals, particularly strays, and strict penal action against those who resort to violence against animal lovers.

“We are tortured along with the animals that are victimized on the streets. According to the Constitution, it is our right to take care of animals,” said a member of the West Bengal Animal Lovers Association that has initiated the petition.

4. Disease On Wane, But Diarrhoea Belt Locals Too Scared To Use KMC Tap

It’s a tale of two water sources at Bagha Jatin — A KMC-piped water tap at D Block and a tubewell at J Block. During the diarrhoea outbreak, the civic body had advised residents not to use water — contaminated with coliform bacteria — from both the sources. After necessary repair works, KMC declared the D Block tap as safe but the tubewell continued to remain “condemned” on paper.

During a visit to the area on Tuesday, TOI, however, found a different usage pattern. Shaken by the goings-on over the past few weeks, the residents have shunned the KMC tap — inspite of an assurance from the civic body — and relying more on the tubewell.

Rekha Dhar, a Daspara (at J Block) resident, for example, has reposed her faith on the “good old” tubewell.

5. Businesses Bleed Around Silent Court

Bhajan Roy, a typist from Burdwan, makes Rs 550 to Rs 660 a day whenever the court functions. On Tuesday, the second day of the strike, he was seated at the same place in front of Gate F of the court building but hadn't earned a rupee till then.

Three associations representing over 11,000 lawyers have called the five-day ceasework to pressure the Union law ministry to appoint judges to all vacant posts in the high court.

Like Bhajan, owners of eateries and other establishments near the high court have lost two days' income already because of the strike.

"The economy around the high court building depends on its functioning. On Saturdays, most business establishments don't open because the court is closed. On the five working days, lawyers and clients come to us for lunch. Obviously, we are facing losses because of the ceasework," said Sailendu Rakshit, the owner of a century-old eatery at Kiran Shankar Roy Road, adjacent to the court building.

6. Calcutta University VC Stays Back To Protest

Calcutta University vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee stayed in the Bengali department till late on Tuesday to protest gherao of five teachers earlier in the day.

Thirty students gheraoed five Bengali teachers in the evening for barring them from taking the first and third semester exams starting 27 February. The students have been barred because they have less than the mandatory 55 percent attendance.

The teachers were gheraoed from 5pm to 8pm. Chakravarti Banerjee, who had left the campus, returned at 8pm and persuaded the protesting students to let the teachers go. When the students refused to leave the campus, she decided to stay back. Pro VC Minakshi Ray, who returned with Chakravarti Banerjee, stayed back as well.

"I don't approve of students skipping classes and then keeping teachers confined in the name of protest," Chakravarti Banerjee said.
