1. Fury Over ‘Faulty’ Teacher Postings Kills Teen

Students of a school in North Dinajpur’s Islampur on Thursday blocked two new teachers from joining over claims that their postings were “faulty and against requirements”, triggering a clash with police that left a former pupil dead.

The violence followed days of students’ protests demanding Bengali-medium teachers and not those of the Urdu-medium or Sanskrit, like the two teachers, for the co-ed Daribhit High School, 15km from Islampur town.

Rajesh Sarkar, 19, a resident who now studies in an industrial training institute and had joined the students along with other local people, took a bullet, his family and the local Trinamul MLA said. At least 11 others were injured in the clashes.

The police had not commented on the allegation till late on Thursday, saying merely that rubber bullets and tear gas had been used.

2. New Majerhat Route On Track

A brick wall in Block G of New Alipore was demolished on Thursday to make way for a new road to connect Humayun Kabir Sarani with Alipore Avenue across a canal and the rail tracks to the east of the fallen Majerhat bridge.

The demolition paved the way for the railways to mark out the alignment of the road that will be an alternative route for vehicles that would earlier take the Majerhat bridge to reach parts of Ekbalpore and Kidderpore from Thakurpukur and Behala.

A team of engineers from Eastern Railway used chalk powder to denote the alignment of the proposed road that will also have a level crossing. They also marked the four posts and two track signals that would have to be shifted.

3. Majerhat Two-Road Plan Changes To One

The government has zeroed in on the southward extension of Alipore Avenue till Humayun Kabir Sarani in New Alipore as the only new road to connect Behala and Alipore.

The decision came after the railways agreed to a build a level crossing at this point and rejected the plan for another crossing for a similar road to the west of Alipore Avenue, running almost parallel to the collapsed Majerhat bridge.

The new road will cut through trees, Chetla canal and two pairs of railway tracks to connect Alipore Avenue to Humayun Kabir Sarani.

It will help Calcutta-bound vehicles from Behala to reach Raja Santosh Road.

4. Buck Stops At Traders In Safety Audit

Traders encroaching on passageways and corridors of market buildings are liable to lose their trade licences under a stricter civic administration that has decided to use the mothballed legal option and file cases against them in the municipal court.

The strategy was finalised at a meeting of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) and the fire services department on Thursday to discuss why the onus of a market building’s safety should be on the occupants rather than entirely on the owners.

Traders’ associations are known to pass the buck to the owners whenever there is an incident like the Bagree Market blaze.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Thursday questioned Presidency University vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia about the delay in the Eden Hindu Hostel repairs at a meeting of seven university heads, officials who were at the meeting said.

Tripathi wanted to know from Lohia the current status of the repair, the reasons behind the delay, how long students will suffer, why the university couldn’t specify when the repairs would be over and what steps it had taken to hasten work, the officials said.

Education minister Partha Chatterjee, who was present at the meeting in Raj Bhavan, questioned Lohia about the delay, they said.
