1. BJP Gets Nod For Kolkata Rally On 11 Aug

The BJP has started preparations for party president Amit Shah’s August 11 rally on Mayo Road after getting clearance from the Kolkata Police on Wednesday.

This followed claims and counter-claims by BJP leaders and the Kolkata police through the day. While the former claimed police were delaying the process, cops claimed they were yet to receive a request for the rally.

The uncertainty prompted Shah to say he would reach Kolkata on 11 August even if police refused permission for the rally. A team from BJP and its youth wing leaders met police officials at Lalbazar in the afternoon and received permission to hold the rally on Mayo Road.

They can treat us when we are ill but they may not be good enough to be our neighbours. This is the message that four Medical College and Hospital alumni, now doing their house-staffship at various hospitals in the state, have got from their neighbours at a south Kolkata housing society.

Aftab Alam, Mojtaba Hassan, Nasir Shaikh and Sawkat Shaikh are now counting their days at their Kudghat flat and have fallen back on a volunteers’ group, called Sanghati Abhijan, to resist eviction. “A few of our members will talk to the neighbours and the local councillor to find a solution,” Dwaipayan Banerjee, speaking on behalf of Sanghati Abhijan, said.
