Kanimozhi Will Move Bill to Abolish Death Penalty In India

DMK’s M Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, will move a Private Member Bill to abolish death penalty in India.

Rajya Sabha MP, Kanimozhi said that she would move a Private Members Bill in Parliament.

In a statement, Ms. Kanimozhi said DMK has opposed death penalty in all cases and favours the immediate abolition of this practice.

The party’s (DMK) 2014 Conference in Tiruchi resolved to abolish death penalty as did the manifesto for Lok Sabha elections that year. We will work towards removing death penalty from statute books. In the upcoming session of Parliament, I will move a Private Members Resolution and Private Members Bill to abolish death penalty.

According to a report in The Hindu, Kanimozhi also said that the Law Commission of India is holding a consultation on the issue and while the party has urged the government to issue moratorium on using death penalty and hold the mercy petitions.
