At least twelve men have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old woman in Jharkhand’s Dumka district on Wednesday evening, according to The Indian Express. The survivor has been admitted in a hospital and is reportedly stable. The young woman was stripped, raped and filmed by the attackers.

A video of the rape survivor’s friend narrating the horrific incident is being circulated on the internet. In the video, the woman’s friend (whose face is hidden), claims that the incident occurred when he and the survivor were at a secluded spot near Sido Kanhu Murmu University (SKMU). Four to five men walked up to the youth, he said, and asked for his phone.

The man is heard saying in the video:

When I refused, they demanded money and called more people to the spot. Then they put a knife to my neck and took my friend inside (a jungle) where they took turns to rape her.

The woman’s friend also says that the perpetrators tried to destroy evidence by “bathing” the girl in a nearby pond, before abandoning her. The youth allegedly lent his clothes to the woman, and somehow, the two managed to reach the police station.

DSP Ashok Kumar Singh told ANI:

We are not in a position to reveal details at this point as it may affect the investigation. We are trying to catch the culprits at the earliest.

PTI reported Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel has informed that 12 people have been arrested on the basis of inputs given by the girl and her friend.

The girl was taking a stroll with her friend near the Sidhu Kanhu Murmu University campus at Dighi eight km from here when at least six men intercepted them at the crossing of Ring Road and Dighi Road on Wednesday evening.

According to PTI, the men demanded Rs 5,100 and a mobile phone from her as a penalty for roaming with a non-tribal. Her friend refused to hand over the mobile and assured them of giving them the money if he was permitted to call his friend.

But the culprits snatched her mobile phone and instead asked their friends to come to the spot, the police said.

BJP leader Saryu Rai told CNN News18 that “the strictest punishment” would be meted out to the perpetrators.
